What is this "dot"?

Hi Folks,
Has anyone else noticed this “dot” with full screen video?
ANY video app when going full screen puts a dot in the upper right corner.
This is NOT the orange/green camera/microphone indicator.
<Screen capture from Apple TV, thus the black screen  >

rofl. Apple… are you saying it’s back?

(I wasn’t aware of that) and post references the Apple TV.
No, this is on 6 different Silicon Macs all running Sequoia,

Again, ANY video app, when brought to full screen.
Restaring makes no difference. Must be a software “artifact”

FWIW I just tried, and I can’t see any dot. Full screen, Apple TV+, external monitor.
I’m on Sequoia as well (beta though).

As I mentioned, this is using Macs,
I just used a screenshot from Apple TV+
Try YouTube or any kind of video.

I see the dot for about 10 seconds when I first go to fullscreen, then disappears. Don’t know if it comes back as I haven’t tested for longer periods of time. This happens when the Bartender app is running. The blue dot does not appear if I quit using bartender.

I think the blue dot means that Bartender is using screen recording.

Wow! That’s a great thought, but there is no Bartender on (all) of these machines.
This dot is pervasive whenever any full screen video is playing. It’s the type of
thing where you probably won’t notice it, but now I stare at it all the time

If I start screen recording (⌘⇧5) the blue dot appears, so I think it is just a subtle indication that the screen is being recorded. It doesn’t appear (at least not for me) if I am playing a video.

hmmm, ok but I can’t think of any app that would be recording,
I thought @neonate had the answer. I’ll keep looking.
Thanks all

Any app that monitors the screen or mousing can be accused of “recording” the screen (at least, according to the warnings I see). You can check System Settings > Privacy and Security > Screen & System Audio Recording to see what has permission.

FWIW, I just checked a YouTube video in fullscreen, and I don’t see any dot.

I’m running macOS Sequoia 15.5 on a MacStudio.

Thanks. One several machines (in my control) Bartender

…sorry finger check. Bartender is installed, but not running
(I did, but no longer use it) The OTHER machines that exhibit this behavior do not have it, BUT I think you, @neonate and @tomalmy are on the right track. I’ll check those other machines this weekend. Thanks all

Just to close on this, it was/is SOUND SOURCE.
Kind of threw me off as I could only see the dot
with video. Not all have Bartender, but all have
Rogue Amoeba Sound Source. Thanks for the help.
