What Setapp apps do you use?

I make extensive use of Supercharge. Here’s how I have the menu configured:

I use a lot of the options in the “Tweaks” section of settings. I’m sure there’s more I could get out if it, but for now it’s just solving a stack of minor annoyances with macOS default behaviors.

For me, about 99% of the time. The developer, Charlie Monroe goes above and beyond to keep the app updated, and is very responsive to requests for support. His media conversion app, Permute is also first-rate. Both are in my SetApp collection.

Yep, very high success rate here too. There’s one, rather obscure, site that used to work but their new DRM prevents it. Other than that, I have a lot of success.

Just took a quick look and there’s a lot will need to spend some time going through. There may be something there.

Many if not most of these I have through Raycast but will play around and see if its useful. Thanks for sharing!

Some of these I have on a rotation as I know they perform similar tasks, however I would say they all get enough use for an honourable mention:

  • Ulysses
  • MindNode
  • Craft
  • BusyCal
  • NotePlan
  • Spark Mail
  • CleanMyMac
  • Dropover
  • Bartender
  • CleanshotX
  • Paste
  • MarsEdit 5
  • Downie
  • Transloader
  • iStat Menus
  • Supercharge

I have the same thing with a couple of apps. I just realised that my post from 2020 was my last review  so its due for a major update.

So here’s my current list from the installed Setapps on my MacBook  in no particular order and with some thoughts after each:

    1. Nitro PDF Pro - Finding this useful for OCR of image slide decks int searchable PDFs.
    1. ClearVPN - I use another VPN but lately I use this as well as a backup. Seems to do a decent job.
    1. Supercharge - Still working out what I can do with this but the reason I installed it was the nifty shortcut detector feature that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else to figure out what app may have hijacked one.
    1. Bartender - Pretty damn useful if a bit too many settings but once you’ve got it going its low maintenance.
    1. DisplayBuddy - This has been great for managing my external monitor as well as tapping the Macbooks extra brightness.
    1. PopClip - Essential as many people here know. Probably in my top ten Mac apps.
    1. AlDente Pro - Started using this recently and have yet to figure out its algorithms but since I use the MacBook mostly at home I figure it helps.
    1. OpenIn - Alternative to Choosy but can be a bit too involved. So far so good.
    1. CleanShot X - Essential and easily a top ten app.
    1. HoudahSpot - I don’t use this enough but it’s search ability seems pretty good. It’s also got a longtime avid user base.
    1. Keep It Shot - This one’s premise is great and when it works I love it but the UI and reliability need work. Haven’t found an alternative.
    1. WhisperTranscribe - Not using this since I still type as a habit but recently discovered Typeless and that’s pretty slick (ping me if you need one of my two invite codes). I also have SuperWhisper and don’t use that much. Wasn’t it on Setapp too?
    1. Default Folder X - I want to love this app’s finder enhancements but for some reason find it too clunky. Perhaps its overkill.
    1. iShowU - Recording meetings with this should be smoother. I currently use Read.ai for Zoom and that’s leagues ahead. I keep this as a backup though.
    1. CleanMyMac X - I keep wanting to clean up my Mac but I don’t trust this not to mess things up. Anyone have best practice tips?
    1. AirBuddy - Sometimes use this to control my bluetooth devices including Airpods. Been using Raycast more for that now though.
    1. Gemini (aka Gemini 2) - Duplicate finder for Mac but again haven’t used it much with same reason as cleanmyMac X.
    1. Permute - This is often useful for modifying and compressing audio files etc. Useful utility in the kit.
    1. iStat Menus - Another always on app. Not essential but nice to have for the menubar.
    1. Prizmo - This one is another OCR tool I use for PDFs but been using Nitro more since its fast and efficient. I keep this installed just in case.
    1. World Clock Pro - Don’t really use this as much but its nicely done. I rely more on my calendaring apps.
    1. VidCap - Adds captions to videos but didn’t find it easy.
    1. Luminar Neo - Can’t be bothered to tweak photos with a separate app let alone built in Apple tools. Perhaps I’ll uninstall.
    1. Paste - I have the ios version as well but since I started using Raycast’s clipboard I find that one more useful. I’m keeping it as a backup for now.

Honorable mention to BetterTouchTool as one of the best apps and a top ten for me until recently but since Raycast I’ve stopped using it to streamline shortcuts, etc. Have not found a reason to go back but its a heck of a powerful utility.

So from one app to over twenty on Setapp I have to say that it’s become quite the useful subscription. I hope they don’t screw it up somehow.
