What's the best Chrome browser extension for quickly summarizing articles and webpages?

I’m ideally looking for something where you basically just click the icon and it summarizes the article or webpage you’re currently looking at.

Free or at least non-subscription would be preferable.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Gemini in Chrome. There’s a free version now. I don’t know if it meets your “click the icon” requirement, but it will most definitely summarize the web page you’re on. See the screenshot for an example using this very webpage.

Thanks! Looks promising, but I’m not seeing any option for Gemini in Chrome. How do you enable and/or access it?

Assuming your instance of Chrome is like mine: look in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window right above your user avatar. You should see a clickable pill that looks like this:

Click on that to open the chat window.

I can’t remember if I needed to install anything other than the latest version of Chrome and sign into my Google account to get Gemini in Chrome. At one time you did need a pro account, but I believe it’s now free for all users.

Here’s the help page.

Oh, that must explain it. I prefer to use Chrome signed-out, so I don’t ever sign in to Chrome. Sounds like that means I can’t use Gemini, which is a bummer. Thanks for the advice, though!

You are looking for Chrome, but I’ll add a mention of “Leo” in the Brave browser (based on Chromium). It’s free and adequate for page summarization and other “chat with this page” needs.

A little bit convoluted but this works everywhere:

BetterTouchTool + OpenRouter.

Add a model like Gemini Flash to BTT, and then use BTT.

BTT has an AI tool,
you can ask “summarize “, and it will show you the results of the active window.

Non-subscription, just load $20 in OpenRouter to get higher usage levels. The Gemini Flash model is very cheap.
Note: you also can have $10 in credits there, and use a free model.
