What’s the size of your /System/Volumes/Preboot folder?

I’m asking because recently DaisyDisk started showing that folder as one of the largest folders on my MacBook Air (with the “small” 256 GB SSD).

On my Mac, it’s 24 GB (containing a folder with a random UUID as its name of 13 GB, a Cryptexes folder of 11 GB and some smaller folders).

Coincidentally(?), the folder with the random name has been created on the day macOS Sonoma 15.5 was released (and I usually update on day 1, so probably also updated macOS that day).

According to Howard Oakley it should be “small”?

  • The small Preboot volume, used to store cryptexes.

About the same: 24 GB (13+11) on a MBP M3 Pro running macOS 15.5. A lot of it seems to be caches and two OS images.

Someone mentioned the same “issue”(?), 20 days ago, but with macOS 14.7, on Reddit.

Unfortunately no “solution” there.
