What's your way to make backups?

Discussions of backups frequently center around recovering from a major hardware failure or a lost or stolen device. Most of the time when I had to recover data for myself or coworkers the files had been missing for weeks, months, or years.

That is why I have always recommended doing test restores to insure that backups are completing successfully and the data can be recovered. And that people know how to restore their data so they don’t have to learn after they suffer a loss.

iCloud only retains deleted files for 30 days.

I should have stated up front - I do not run a business from home. If I did, I certainly would follow proper backup protocol. But for my personal files, iCloud + NAS + copies to USB key are good enough for me.

YMMV, but in general, the people I interact with (Family, friends, clients) are more paranoid about the backup/security of their personal files (especially family photos) than business stuff!

Neither do I. But use the same methods to protect my personal data that I did to protect company data, before I retired. Good luck.

+1 on this.

Once a System Admin, always a System Admin

I still remember the moment where, on transitioning into a career in compliance, I realised that at work I would be a Standard User, a Norm for the first time in 15 years. It was a shock, I’ll tell you.
