This is an interesting but not surprising assessment. The relatively slower iPhone 16 shipments comports with Gruber’s take.
I agree. Mark Gurman was betting against an Apple iPhone “Super Cycle” at least a month ago. And based on the way Craig Federighi was tap dancing around Joanna Stern’s questions about Apple Intelligence, it’s looking like it may be much further off than anyone expects.
When asked about Siri Craig mentioned opening garage doors, setting timers, turning on lights, and sending messages . . . multiple times. Things that people have been asking Siri to do for years, with mixed results.
He said AI is a “many year . . . honestly even decades long arc of technology playing out”. Meanwhile people are getting things done with AI solutions from other companies. Solutions that runs on their existing hardware.
Where is the incentive to purchase new Apple gear until “Apple Intelligence” is a finished product?
I know it is early and Apple Intelligence will improve, but for now, I don’t find it of much value–certainly not enough to motivate me to upgrade my phone.
