Why does Apple Maps App on my iPhone switch to the Camera App?

Every now and then Apple Maps App on my iPhone 16e switches to the Apple Camera App without me touching anything. This is very annoying when I’m using Maps to direct me as I drive!

I’m using iOS 26.3.1

Can anyone please provide some insight into what might be causing this?

Sounds very weird! This is a guess but does the 16e have a camera button and are you using a case? I find my 17pro can lift slightly out of its tech woven case in a way that causes side buttons to be inadvertently pressed. Is vibration as you drive causing something similar?

A few options spring to mind as possibilities

  1. the Camera button or action button is opening the camera by coming into contact with something. as @Percussor suggests, it could also be an ill fitting case
  2. is your phone in a holder which is nudging a button per the above?
  3. Do you have the back tap accessibility feature switched on at all and setup to open the camera?
  4. Do you have any shortcuts which open the Camera which are being invoked by anything?

Some other things which may help you identify what’s happening.

  • You specifically mention maps, but what happens if you drive and don’t open anything, does it still happen? (If it does, maps is not a factor)
  • Have you rebooted your phone recently?

Thanks - the culprit may be the tap back accessibility feature. I’ve now turned it off.
