Why does my Apple ID password keep failing?

A few weeks ago my Apple ID password didn’t work. So I reset it. (And all associated app-specfic passwords)
Yesterday, again it wouldn’t work and I repeated the process. tested it to make sure and it was good.
Until this morning and now the latest password isn’t working.

Have I been hacked? Or just really unlucky? Any ideas?

Here’s a list of suggestions you might try. But before you do, make sure your time and date are correct. I seem to recall having problems years ago because mine wasn’t .

How do you know that the AppleID password isn’t working? Is it a specific app or the operating system that is complaining? Is the error always showing up on the same device?

Thanks everyone.

Maybe operator error…though it happens too often to accept.

But I tried it on another device (good suggestion!) and it worked. Then I went back to the original device and it worked!

So either, operator error or a fault that self-corrected. I leave this post as either a monument to my stupidity or a warning of what may come.

No one else has this issue? That leans towards stupidity. In any case, thanks for your help.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. As they say, stuff happens. If you learned from it, consider it a success.

May I ask if your Apple ID was a .mac account? I ask because when the my new iPhone 16 Pro came in and I synced everything over from the previous phone, it asked me to log in to my secondary Apple ID again. When I tried the correct password it kept saying it was the incorrect combination of username and password.

I ended up removing the account and trying to login with the same account, but using .me instead of the .mac. Same password worked to get me to the next step of authentification. It seemed odd, but it worked and interestingly enough, the account shows the .mac address on the iCloud account screen. I wonder if it has to do with the changes Apple made to the Apple ID recently. Sorry for the long response, thought to share just in case I missed something.

There have been multiple times over the years that our Apple ID’s seemed to have glitched for some reason, but if you look at the settings for Messages, under Send & Receive it states (on my devices)

You can receive iMessaages to and reply from

My mobile number
My username @icloud.com
My username @mac.com
My username @me.com

It appears the Apple domains we log in with are just aliases. And we can use any or all that we have had assigned to our username.

The account I mentioned is not really signed in as the main account. It is secondary, so I don’t really use it for that one. It is interesting, I only see one for my main iCloud account. I’ll have to try to log in with just the .me account on a spare phone and check it out. Thank you, @WayneG for the direction.
