It’s our answer to a timely question: How do we earn trust and hold attention in an age of scroll and skim? How do we create Signal in a world of noise?" asks Frank Shaw**, Microsoft’s chief communications officer.

Microsoft’s response to a world of people doomscrolling on X and TikTok is a print magazine that you can thumb through in peace and quiet.

This is an interesting approach, from a technology company. If you subscribe to Apple News+ or to The verge, you can read the entire article.

Thanks; some interesting bits in there. Slow Journalism, who is helping them produce the magazine, has an interesting publication, Delayed Gratification. They intentionally are a few months behind on reporting so they can write with better perspective. This was published in spring 2025, for example.

Also chuckled at Costco’s magazine being an inspiration. That makes sense, but I don’t know why Costco people love that thing so much. We get the magazine at our house; we just don’t get it.

Interesting to see how this trend of “slower” content formats is gaining traction again. I think there’s value in stepping away from the constant flood of online updates and engaging with something more intentional. The mention of Delayed Gratification caught my eye, I wasn’t aware Microsoft had partnered with them. Makes me wonder if more tech companies will start experimenting with similar approaches to reach their audiences in a different headspace.
