I have a Tesla with wireless charging mats. With the iPhone 15, the wireless charging would quickly overheat the phone and it would stop charging. I was hopeful that the new iPhone 17 Pro cooling system would improve this situation, but after a weekend of spending long hours in the car I don’t think it is any better. Is this just a bad design of the Tesla chargers or do all car wireless chargers suffer from the same problem?
BMW’s does. I disabled it a while back. Wireless CarPlay, GPS navigation, and screen on are way too much for it. I hadn’t even tried with the 17 but the 15 and 16 both overheated quickly under those conditions. Plugged in I have no issues at all with the 17 (Pro).
The “Iconic Plateau” prevents the phone from lying perfectly flat on the charging mat, especially since I have a thin case on it. This results in an insecure connection, causing poor or sporadic charging while driving. Since the charging is not sustained over a long period, the phone never heats up. Consequently, I’ve given up on wireless charging and plug the phone in to charge it while driving.
Yup, same overheating issue in my BMW i4 & iphone 11 pro. Plug it into USB to charge & no issues at all.
OK, back to wired charging in the car then. BTW, I use the MagSafe charger at work and notice that the phone sits slightly raised from the desk so air is flowing around the top and bottom. I guess that design is on purpose and the lack of airflow in the car chargers is what leads to the overheating.
