I’m not sure about slander, but I’ve definitely encountered hyperbole and some fear-mongering (I’m thinking of the doomsday AI scenarios). 
It’s refreshing to find communities, like the MPU Forum, that maintain a more civil and constructive discourse. A little civility goes a long way in making the overall experience much more pleasant for everyone involved.

don’t take the internet seriously, the internet is divided into those that like to have fun and those that get angry at anything.
As someone much wiser than me once said
it all comes down to whether you view the internet as the Greek agora or the roman circus.
