1Password 8 will be electron, subscription only, and no longer support local vaults

Well, this is disappointing.

I can live with the subscription model; I wind up buying every upgrade anyway, so the overall cost isn’t that much different, and I will pay to keep my secure passwords and other stuff secure. As it turns out, I get the 1pw subscription bundled now with eero plus anyway, but I do also pay for a business plan.

I can also live with putting my vaults on the 1pw servers;mi moved to that a while ago.

I’m really unhappy with the move to electron, though. Electron just seems a bit too crufty for me with the apps I’ve tried (Yes, including Obsidian).

I may try Apple’s solution, or even see what choices SetApp has.

While I eventually expected agilebits to move to subscription only, I did not see them moving to electron. That’s very disappointing for a mac-centric company like Agilebits. At least there is a standalone app and they didn’t go browser extension only.

I simply cannot imagine a worse paradigm than this.

Loved that app before the big change, thankfully its demise came along with the rise of Obsidian.

That said, the core of 1Password for me lies in its near seamless integration with the system and shared vaults. Should the first item be compromised, I would easily give up its sharing features and move to Keychain.

Just had a look at Enpass. It looks pretty good. BUT it’s not open source and doesn’t have security audit, which is a deal breaker.

Agilebits are under US jurisdiction as well. So they could be equally required to put in a backdoor. Most of the audits are pentests of the user facing system.

Enpass latest is from 2018. 1Password offers a list with a few more recent ones.

But what’s left? Bitwarden, KeepassX?

FWIW… I was working customer support for 1Password when 1Password 7 came out, and I can attest that the biggest issue we had by a gigantic landslide was people who bought the standalone version and wanted the subscription version.

The worst was when they bought the standalone from the Mac App Store because Apple is so terrible about refunds.

Yes, the MPU crowd may skew towards those who want standalone vaults, etc. but the vast majority of people did not.

Also, re: Electron… I wasn’t thrilled by that news, but other than the preferences window being different, I’m not sure I would have noticed (other than the UI being different).

One of the main developers posted on Twitter that they had a parallel development going in Swift UI and it performed worse than Electron.

As for the subscription model, you may not like it, but it’s not going away for the future of software.

Agilebits is a Canadian company.

Let’s save the fear-mongering theories for another day; otherwise, people might get facts and conjecture confused.

Well, I stand corrected on that.
Not even going to comment on the second part.

I agree but this means I’ll commit to fewer apps and use default apps that I can make work good enough. I realize the company will likely do better with the subscription model and as I said in my OP, I don’t begrudge them. They are a good company with an excellent app. but I will learn to make do with less.

No local vault is an absolute deal killer. If the company goes under, or suddenly shuts down, or has a service interruption, or is purchases, I can’t imagine what I’d do to recover all of my passwords and such. What are they thinking??

Edit to add: After some reading, it’s not clear to me that data won’t be kept locally on-device and just synced through their service. If that’s the case then it’s not as terrible as I thought when I saw “no longer support local vaults”

Thanks for the link. I thought there was no audit at all but at least there was something. I should’ve dig deeper.

I don’t know, probably something along the lines of… “That’s extremely unlikely to happen without any warning and chance to export your data, which is stored on your computer in addition to being synced to their servers”?

Do you really think they designed the entire system so that it fails if you’re offline or can’t connect to their server?

Haven’t read up too much, but from a security perspective doesn’t moving to an electron app increase the attack surface of the app? If so, why would you want that in a password manager? I’ll do some digging…

I’ve never used 1Password for teams but in the last couple of years I’ve used 1PW on Mac, IOS, Windows, and ChromeOS. I currently have 257 items in my primary vault.

It took me several attempts to replace Evernote after using it for 10 years and I’ve been using 1PW even longer. It will probably take something major to get me to change.

I don’t know. LassPass users found out that their vaults were inaccessible during a server outage a while back. I have no problem using their service if I can access my data without it. I won’t use a password manager that requires the company to continue to exist in order for me to access my data.

I had a problem when I migrated to 1Password 7 a couple of years ago. Something went wrong with the process and I wasn’t shown the information for the Emergency Kit. I had to delete the account and try again. At the time all the deletion needed was a confirmation from my email address. This seemed dangerous to me but I thought “well, at least I have a backed up local vault.”

So, yeah, not having local vault would be a real problem for me as well. Cloud storage, by itself, isn’t a backup and this is data that I really want backed up.

I am surprised no one mentioned LastPass as an alternative. Is that a taboo here or is LastPass already a ‘cross platform’, subscription model and therefore, in the same boat as 1P now?

I’m getting more value with 1Password Families since I also have an early pricing. Sharing passwords and private information is not feasible on Keychain as it is built for a single user. I don’t want to remove a system that is working for my family.

Some of the password managers have already been breached or hacked and 1Password has so far been great with their security.

I have whittled down my subscription starting last year but 1Password for me is essential that I am willing to keep paying for peace of mind.

Good thing they were subscription, otherwise you’d be out several hundred dollars.

AFAIK Lastpass is an excellent product. It’s an online password manager that uses browser extensions rather than local apps. It offers a free tier.
