This is the first increase in price I remember for 1P for Families and I’ve been on that since it was launched in 2016.
20% over 10 years isn’t a significant amount and we still see the value in the product.

It looks like sponsoring a Formula One team and golf tournaments don’t pay for themselves. And here’s me thinking the idea of such activities was that they should.![]()
Since they’re raising their prices 33%, I’m debating if it is still worth the cost. The last time I tried to switch away, it was before the Mac Passwords app. Keychain was not a good replacement. But what about now that the Passwords app has been out for a few years?
Here are the features of 1Password that I use, are there replacements for all these features?
The percentage increase is irrelevant. The question should be just “is $48 for a year of 1P worth it to me” at your next renewal date. And it either is, or it isn’t.
ps. loving the hate for 1P being a minor sponsor of an F1 team, on a forum about products made by the company that effectively sponsored a whole F1 movie.
But they could have picked anyone else but Red Bull.
Some things are just too hard to forgive ![]()
Is there a good family alternative that also has a UK GBP pricing? 1P increase also means that I have to pay an exchange rate as they don’t offer GBP. Half my family are iOS the othe Android. Any recommendations?
No one forced me. And I can afford the extra $0.03 a day.
Bitwarden.
I left 1Password when they started breaking promises and made the switch to focusing on companies instead of private customers. I was using 1Password since 1Password 3 and always bought the new version but I completely lost trust in them.
First I was using Apple Passwords but I wanted to have my passwords on Windows, too. So I started using Bitwarden.
It is not a beauty but a password manager doesn’t need to be beautiful. I want it to run in the background as ressource saving as possible and be there when I need it. And Bitwarden does a tremendous job in this regard. I can’t recommend it enough.
If you don’t like it, the KeePass universe is also a good alternative.
I must concurr. They did force everyone on using their servers when they killed local vaults. And they also forced everyone into subscriptions by abandoning their iOS app their browser extensions as well.
I agree the price increase isn’t that big of a deal, just some coffees for developers more per year, but it’s not because of inflation or increased costs why their get more expensive. It is because of shareholders. They want to see their investment back.
Of course they do. I started a 401K the first day my employer offered one in the early 80’s. You can’t build wealth keeping your money in CDs.
Looks like Proton Pass might be a good alternative. They also import 1P.
Yes they did when they killed standalone vaults. Maybe before your time? Anyway, users that accept the price increase meekly will just embolden them to do it again and again. Whatever their venture handlers want, they will do.
Congratulations on your success. ![]()
Nope. I started using 1PW in 2008.
Thanks. Not upgrading my Apple devices until I need to pays for all my software subscriptions.
Thank you for this. Finding Uplock makes this thread worth it. Learning about new (to me) apps is why I love MPU.
I keep 1P for the price of a cup of coffee a month (annual subscription) because I keep all credit cards, software licenses, passwords, router information in secure notes. Apples own password manager is not an option because you’d lose everything at once if your apple ID is ever locked up (happned to me once) or if you ever leave the apple ecosystem. 1P is like Switzerland. A neutral safe place for all my information. In the end everone has to decide for themselves what security is worth it. I understand that the cost of living has gone up and they have to pay their bills, too. I don’t weigh it new features. I weigh in it staying in buisness and keeping my information safe.
This is a problem with a lot of software these days, I think. The need for “growth”. Often things hit a natural stopping point and nothing more really need to be added, but new things get chunked on.
FWIW, I really like 1Password but stopped using it as I don’t need most of what they now offer. No point in paying a subscription for development of things I don’t need or want.
“Oh, I’m sorry, you are absolutely correct. That was not the password you told me to store.”

That said, guess I’ll stay with 1P Families because now my wife relies on it. It is the only one she has accepted and she does not take kindly to the idea of switching software…
Talk about a perfect lock-in.
I pay 75% less for my Macs now than in the 80s. Hardware is not the problem here.
A lot of people, including me, use free locked notes in Apple Notes for saving software codes, bank cards, etc. You could also keep it in an locked database like DEVONThink.
Autofill bank card info is encrypted in Safari.
I’ve never understood why people feel like they need to pay for 1P in order to keep secure notes. It’s handy if you’re already paying for the subscription, but really not related to password protection. It’s nice to have this info in one place, but not necessary. Especially for $47.88 per year for an individual and $71.88 for a family. That’s a very expensive convenience for something we all already have for no cost at all.
A recent article on how to covert from 1P to Apple Passwords from 9 to 5 Mac: Here's how to switch from 1Password to Apple Passwords - 9to5Mac
Apple Passwords also has a share with family option, and my wife relies on it as well. Only it’s free, not $71.88 per year. ![]()
