1Password "updating" the cost of the subscription

I agree. Apple hardware is the main reason I own an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. The last time I needed better hardware was when I upgraded my iPhone 6s to an iPhone 11.

I purchased my iPhone 16 Pro to take advantage of Apple intelligence.

Standard subscription trap: They need ‘permanent inflow’ to develop ‘new features,’ but the ‘new features’ are just bloat to justify the bill. I just want a lock for my door, not a concierge service and a travel agent. Why am I paying for 1Password to store things my OS already handles for free? They traded user agency for a monthly fee and called it 'security.

Agilebits is correct in one assumption. Lots of users will just accept the enshittification and even pay more to get it.

I think the main value of 1Password is the keeping the service polished across all the platforms I, family or coworkers want to use, not a stream of new features.

1Password does have a lot of features, but outside of developer services, they’re mostly about keeping usage smooth and unsurprising. Harder to do than it looks.

I just received an email from 1Password. I also have the legacy Families Launch Special Plan. The cost of that plan will not be increasing.

Now that it is $72 a year, I think I am done. Gonna go with apple passwords I think. Maybe some shared secure notes for other stuff.

the 1password community manager on reddit says the backlash is tanking their support system… I guess more than a few people are unhappy.

I am very happy I switched my family to Apple Passwords when it came out, that’s already saved me serious $$, especially in light of these price increases. I’ve not missed any features of 1PW and have had many less bugs and issues filling in webpages (and I can finally use Safari profiles without my passwords bugging out). I never used it for software passwords or secure information, fortunately, and always kept locked Apple Notes for this purpose.

After a while with Passwords, I much prefer the native interface to 1PW’s web app, and I love the the menu bar UI. I would never go back to an Electron app.

The migration only took minutes and all family barely notice the change, including my two kids, wife and 80 year old Mum who hates changing applications - for her it really “just worked” and she didn’t notice any difference beyond opening a different application (Apple got the UX bang on). The only hassle was having to reshare passwords, which took around 10 mins.

Yes, I received that email as well by now.

Let’s hope we’re not “next” or that they change our deal even further…

three months ago they said the price increase was only for new users… so … may the force be with you

I haven’t received any emails from 1Password about our family plan cost, so I went to the website and it shows that it will go up to $71.88 with our April renewal. :unamused: So we’ve had 7 years since signing up at the $59.85 price. No “Families Launch Special” here as we kept on the one-time purchase for as long as possible.

I get mine as part of Eero+, no price change as of my renewal for that package this January. I wonder if it’ll go up next year…

I gotta say, I’ve been less-than-impressed with the product recently. In the browser extension (running on Brave) if 1Password (the main app) isn’t unlocked, the browser extension will prompt me to unlock (and accept my correct password) in a seemingly-never-ending loop until I go manually unlock the main application.

I’m on 1PW because I used it back in the “local vaults” days, and I now have my wife in the routine of using it regularly, and she knows how to do everything including share vaults.

So I’ll probably pay the renewal fee unless the product gets substantially worse.

I’ve noticed that issue sometimes, with the extension not unlocking the main app. Would like to see it fixed!

Switched to Apple passwords a while ago, no regrets. Still have a legacy paid-for 1P account that I don’t even have installed on anything but my phone, just in case. Apple notes has a secure place to secure confidential, non-password specific data that I once put in 1P. Family sharing of passwords with Apple? No subscription fees. I make my own coffee at home because I’m budget-sensitive (cheap), so don’t have the $$$ subscription comparison to the barista shops. Was a big fan of 1P back in the day, today Apple Passwords fits all my needs. YMMV.

I got that same email a day after the first. The original email made me poke at Apple Passwords when I otherwise wouldn’t have. I have had similar extension login issues as others have mentioned in this thread even in Safari. It’s unfortunate for them that they sent that out because I wasn’t even considering moving, and I wonder if others followed suit. I will probably pay the renewal here next month, but going to run both parallel for a while now to see if I might ditch it. It’s hard to move the family when they’re used to something.

I think you’re right. I don’t miss it now that we have the password app, which no doubt lost them a lot of customers.

I guess they figure that those customers who’ve stayed with them value the software more than others and will tolerate a price rise.

Their email quite literally said:

The one time users do what you ask…

I got the same email, going from $6.95-$7.99/mo for the family plan. Considering there hasn’t been a price increase since I joined in 2022, I think this is more than reasonable. I’ll also say I’ve seen a lot of improvements in terms of developer tools for managing secrets, something I have been very appreciative of and easily justifies the increase in my eyes.

I definitely think apps like Apple’s Passwords is taking some of their sales, but I also think this is a service that isn’t competing for the same space. I see 1Password vs Apple Passwords like Raycast/Alfred vs Spotlight. They both have their places in the ecosystem, and if the included solution is enough, then no reason to pay for an “upgrade”.

I would very much like to know what the editorial process was that resulted in a price increase being referred to as an update. I think it’s too odd to be blamed on Marketing.
