550: The World of RSS

Reeder 4 actually added support for a iCloud backed read later service built in, as well as support for Pocket. It also added search. So yeah, the aesthetics of Reeder have stayed the same for some time, the features have really matured.

Inoreader has added a highlight feature to their pro accounts, on web only, but coming to mobile in the next couple months. I’m impressed.

Thanks! Yes, I have a pro account and actually it already works on mobile, BUT you can only export the highlights, and not the notes. (Checked with support and they confirmed there is no way for that at the moment, unfortunately.)

Have you tried adding Pocket as a sharing service only? I’ve had no issues with Pocket sync (currently over 4K articles in my reading list).

That’s a bummer. Hopefully that can be fixed soon. I use Pocket for highlighting, and I doubt I’ll be switching, since I’m happy with my third party RSS readers.

They said they logged it as a feature request. Which is a polite way of saying ā€œmaybe never, but who knows, maybe one day you might be pleasantly suprisedā€.

I must admit I was sad not to see more love given to lire. I’ve used all the apps mentioned pretty extensively, I used Unread for years, and I’ve used Reeder from version 1. However, I found lire had every feature I was looking for, often better executed than the competition.

So lire has full text extraction that I have found much, much more reliable than fiery feeds, which fails on certain soft paywall sights, like NYT and WaPo. Lire has a URL scheme support that I didn’t even know about til I was poking around in the settings. And it is (in my opinion) much more attractive than fiery feeds. It has the ā€œslow feedsā€ feature. It has a special ā€œauthorsā€ section where you can pin favorite authors. It will email articles to your kindle. It is so feature packed. But the real kicker is when you (accidentally, I assume?) stated that it was $10/year. Lire is a one time, $7 purchase. Well worth checking out for rss power users.

Having tried Unread I am at the point of subscribing or looking elsewhere… I have loved Unread however would much rather a one off Ā£10 purchase than Ā£20 a year… so is Lire just as good?!

I also like Unread but I’m just not willing to pay a subscription for a newsreader. I switched to NetNewsWire. I don’t like it as well but it is good enough for my purposes.

I quite agree… but a bit like they say in the episode reading on Unread is beautiful!

Unfortunately I am using Inoreader and NetNewsWire doesn’t support that. Mind you I am not set on that if you feel another is better!

lire just released a new version 4 on iOS witn modern interface. Mac version is said to be in the works. It supports Inoreader.

I’ve not tried it. I’m using Feedly.

Wished iOS had trials… (or that Lire offered a low priced subscription that I could cancel after a month)

(€10,99 is a bit much for trying out an App I might not end up using long term)

@rob I noticed that too! Huge Reeder fan. I wonder if there’s a TestFlight available. I noticed on, I believe it was AppStories Podcast for homescreens, that John had the Reeder 5 beta icon in his setup.

Thank you for sharing that.

Hope Reeder 5 offers alternative icons… (like 4 did)

I’m sure it will. I would imagine the icons being being the cloud-star in the colors that are offered now

This article (in French) has screenshots of Reeder 5 for macOS and iOS:

thanks for sharing that - looks like some UI tweaks - hoping widgets come with the release

On Mac, I’ve stuck with ReadKit too because of its automation ( AppleScript dictionary makes it linkable), whereas Reeder deprecated its automation (in the version I have). ReadKit does consume a lot of CPU, but ReadKit is not an app I keep running all day so the CPU issue doesn’t bother me.

I don’t know if the issue you raised is still present in relation to the new Evernote (10). Personally, I don’t use Evernote (except for testing our software and assessing workflows for research on personal information management). Evernote 10 is a big step backwards with app-side automation. (Maybe they will improve it??) Reduces the option for working around issues such as you raised. (Server-side automation though should still be available with IFTTT and Zapier. )

Back to ReadKit… personally I bookmark links with a certain app, which I find more convenient than using ā€œshareā€. But when I do ā€œshareā€ in ReadKit, it’s to Pinboard.

If you want to capture the whole page easily, there’s options like Pocket. You can open the URL in a web browser and use any of various tools to capture (e.g., EagleFiler or DEVONthink).
