Do you think Luther thought this when he nailed his thoughts to the church door?
I went on NotePlanās Discord to see if NotePlan supports Link Previews like Craft.
Unfortunately, at this time it does not.
I did learn that two time MPU guest Michael Hyatt uses NotePlan!
Two weeks in, I use NotePlan for journaling - Daily, Weekly and Quarterly planning. I get it via SetApp so the price to use for a while is 0. Iām not using it for calendaring or tasks. I had been journaling in Obsidian but having one vault for notes and another for personal reflections was a hassle.
Many others have talked about the good of NotePlan, so I will talk about the issues:
- Support - Iāve had an open support request since Aug 7th with no auto response and one human response since.
- Import - even though I followed their required naming conventions for my import, it didnāt get my weekly or quarterly notes moved over.
- Toolbar - on iOS and iPadOS isnāt editable and contains stuff I would never use (LLM??) hiding insert image which i use Daily.
- iOS keyboard doesnāt offer automatic emojis. Itās a little thing, when I journaled in Obsidian the keyboard offered emojis when I typed words like workout or mindful. They made me smile.
Upshot a good enough app for now, it does get better slowly (Iāve read old release notes). However the support is currently lacking. Perhaps being featured on MPU was harmful for support in the short/medium term.
Supportās usually really quick, so I suspect itās a combo of being featured in MPU and maybe that itās summer (I canāt remember where staff are based, but if any are in Europe theyāre likely on holidays and holiday cover).
Iāve wondered about the command bar on iOS. It doesnāt have a paste button on the left which I find disconcerting because Iām used to it on the standard iOS keyboard, Drafts, etc. and itās muscle memory to click on it to paste.
Iāve also been using it for a couple of weeks since the MPU episode. For what itās worth, I sent a support email yesterday (hello@noteplan.co) and received a response within a couple of hours. Not sure if you tried that way with your initial request, but perhaps worth checking out.
Turns out that the support person has been without power for a few days and was also overwhelmed by the MPU needs. Worse import from Obsidian needs some love and so Iām awaiting the developers help.
Good news, it is safe to turn the root folder of the notes app into a git repo and I have just done that.
Iāve been working with NotePlan the last two weeks. Hereās a blog post describing my experience and conclusions:
Someone mentioned thereās a way to view this on the web? Any more info on it? I work in a PC environment and would be nice to be able to interact with it on my work machine.
Yes, there is a web version you can use with Windows: https://app.noteplan.co/
Hereās a video demo by the developer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8_M8C86FlQ
I enjoyed your article. Iāve also transitioned to NotePlan for similar reasons that youāve outlined.
Thank you. Itās the app I didnāt know I was looking for! Itās a natural fit for my workflow, and the integration of notes, daily notes, tasks, and a calendar makes everything flow so well.
I had heard it was something like that, but without the specifics. A while ago, I did an audit of all the apps I use, and made sure I was using the Setapp version, even if I had earlier purchased a license. That way, the developer not only gets my original license fee, but also gets a share of my Setapp payments.
Search works great for me. Itās better if you use tags (# or @), but I always find exactly what Iām looking for.
Iām not having that problem, but I wanted to make sure you knew that Noteplan has great versioning support. Click on the three dots menu in your note, and choose āView Revisions.ā Every time you add or remove something from a note, it is saved, and you can easily go back and recover the missing text.
When I tested NotePlan sometime ago, I could not search for a task. I could search for calendar, events and notes, but not tasks. Was I missing something when I attempted that?
I donāt think so. A task in Noteplan is simply a bit of markdown text within a note in the form of ā* Example Taskā. It should have come up in your search within the appropriate note.
I just ran a search for a term, and the first item that showed up was a task. So yes, you can search for tasks.
Iām not sure what Iām doing wrong. For example, in Reminders, I have a recurring task to get my Covid booster on October 1. However, when I searched for Covid or booster in NotePlan, the task never showed up. I could only find the task in NotePlan by going directly to the date. The only thing that showed up were prior Covid related events in my calendar.
Perhaps I was doing something wrong. I would think one could click on āSearch,ā type Covid, and find the task āSchedule Covid Booster.ā
Iām intrigued by NotePlan as I like the idea of my tasks, calendar and project notes being in one place but managing and finding Reminders integrated tasks in NP seems difficult.
Yes. If you pay for the Noteplan subscription directly, MacOS, iOS and iPadOS are all included. Access to the web interface is included, as well.
