837: Menu Bar Mayhem

Sorry about the shenanigans with my audio the last few weeks, gang. I bought a new interface and apparently it had a second level processing that I wasn’t aware of. Got it all cleaned up and turned off before this week’s episode recorded so everything should be back to normal with this episode.

When it comes to audio gear, it is my sincere desire to never change anything ever again.

I love cotypist. It’s better than I ever imagined.

Last week I was writing some stuff and I was looking for the right word. I closed my eyes while I tried to conjure up the word I needed. Nothing. But then when I opened my eyes and looked at the screen it was sitting there waiting for me.

And guess what?

The word was actually part of my intellectual property. I wouldn’t have found it in a thesaurus. Cotypist had somehow predicted the word based on what is just typed and what id typed several weeks earlier.

One thing I wish Apple Music would have is a Menu Bar app. A light weight music app is what the menu bar was made for.

Welcome @beardfm. You are off to a great start with @MacSparky. We’ll certainly miss @ismh86, but so glad you’ve agreed to co-host MPU.

Moom was lauded in this episode. I’m a huge fan too and have shared a Keyboard Maestro macro that leverages the power of Moom.

On a related note, Rob Griffiths (@griffman) from Many Tricks, is active on the Keyboard Maestro forum. Rob has contributed some incredible macros.

I love supporting small companies like Many Tricks especially when their products are awesome.

Haven’t listened to the episode, but wanted to mention that development of Ice has stalled. Fortunately, somebody forked it into Thaw and is actively developing that:

PS: I did not discover this myself; credits go to the person who posted about it here on MPU, but I can’t find that post using internal and external search functionality…

I second Thaw, switched from Ice and it works great!

I think it’s Many Tricks.

Yes, I’ve updated the post! Thanks for correcting me.

Odd that I made the same typo twice.

I’m a big fan of Rob’s Macro counter - it shows me statistics of which macro I triggered most. And of course, I love his Moom.

OK that’s wild…will have to try it in addition to the 1,000X other apps we talked about this week

That would be great, and Apple Podcasts too!

Thank you, pleasure to be here! And I’ve resisted Keyboard Maestro for so long just because I wasn’t sure I had the mental bandwidth to have another utility in the background, but it seems this podcast has me destined to become a user!

About the closest I’ve found for something like that is NotchNook, which can at least add a control at the top of the screen.

So if anyone is on the fence about whether to go back to / stick with / abandon Bartender, I’ve been in dialogue with the developer over the last six weeks or so. What David said in the show is 100% spot on re: the news being over-inflated. They are dedicated to improving it and whilst it’s not been without issues with Tahoe, it’s been pretty stable for me over the last few weeks and the last update SEEMS to have sorted all that - however I"ve said I’m not covering it on SCO until I’m comfortable all bugs are quashed.

I really miss it when I don’t use it!

@beardfm, I’ve really enjoyed your YouTube channel, especially the Shortcuts videos.

MPU’ers, I suggest we show our support for the transition by subscribing to Stephen’s excellent channel.

Wow, @MacSparky must be getting soft. I’m surprised you weren’t quizzed on it before he extended the offer to join MPU. :joy:

In all seriousness, @beardfm I’m sure you’d love Keyboard Maestro. Admittedly it does take a short investment of time to get it, but once you do, you’ll be hooked.

Also, the Keyboard Maestro documentation and forum are absolutely top-notch!

@beardfm, considering your Shortcuts expertise, maybe this will pique your interest…

When Bartender stopped working with the Tahoe .0 Betas, and then the Bartender Betas were less than functional, it caused me to take a good look at my menu bar usage and the menu bar controls in System Settings. I cleaned up what I was putting in the menu bar and determined that I didn’t really need Bartender or a replacement.

Lots of things I had in the Menu Bar easily went into Control Center or Widgets.

Third that. Ice stopped working for me on the latest version of Tahoe too.

Welcome to MPU, Alex
