I tried. Got the pre-order done with a Feb 6 delivery (didn’t want to hang out at the Apple Store on the 2nd), but my prescription is outside their limits so I had to cancel the whole thing.
The most balanced and insightful article I’ve seen on Vision Pro was published by Basic Apple Guy yesterday: An Ignorant Take on Vision Pro.
I could have told you that much.
I don’t think anyone buying one now really knows what it will be in the future. There is the idea of this metaverse that Facebook was really trying to get to happen, but only time will tell if that will happen. I am not buying it for that, I am buying it because it’s cool new tech and I am stupid with money (but I am not going into to debt to buy it or anything).
Speaking of FB, I read somewhere that they are happy that the VP is coming out, because they think it will drive interest in their own VR/AR products.
They’re probably thinking that their products can be the obvious alternatives for those who can’t or don’t want to spend $3,500+ on a Vision Pro, and depending on what they come up with, they may be right.
I don’t have a need for a Vision Pro but I have also questioned the utility of this v1.0 device. Marques Brownlee has had the opportunity to wear the AVP four times and recently discussed it on his waveform podcast.
The weight thing doesn’t scare me. Everyone says the AirPod Max are too heavy and that they can’t wear them more than an hour. I don’t find that to be the case for me at all. Maybe when I first got them, but I have worn them for hours and do not find them uncomfortable.
It probably won’t bother a lot of people. At one time I had a job that required me to wear a 3 lb protective helmet. It took wearing it several hours a day for a week or so but I got used to it.
But the weight of the AVP will not be balanced on the top of the head. I wonder how it will feel to a 5’ 2" 110 pound Mac Power User?
Thanks for posting the link, that was the most down to earth discussion of that I have heard/read. For those who don’t want to watch it, they do discuss weight, but he also says that is not a dealbreaker. It does get tiring, but they all seem to like it despite of that.
Edit: I posted too soon, one guy said at the end it is “One of the most advanced, magical device I have ever used, that I am not sure if I want to use.”
I think that must have the been first time Joanna Stern has cooked something. Her knife skills are not good.
Interesting video. I got a nice laugh when she said how well it worked with a Mac for the cost of [the price of everything she was using popped up on the screen]. More mostly positive impressions.
My inserts shipped today (separate from the AVP). Also from China which surprised me.
It’s fun to see the reviews dropping.
Damn, that’s an expensive pair of ski goggles.
I just finished watching Nilay Patel’s AVP review for The Verge. After watching three reviews I can say without a doubt I will not be doing any video calls with someone wearing a VP. If I have to clean up and put on decent shirt so does everyone else.
I haven’t watched anything from Patel since his original Apple Watch review where he made it about his great social life and how the notifications are overload for his busy life. Is this one worth watching?
His review is named “magic, until it’s not”. So it isn’t a everything is perfect review.
He compliments the technology while pointing out the downsides, like it messes up your hair when you use it. And the weight. He says the hand tracking works, until it doesn’t. And “this is the best anyone has made ‘in there’ (in the VP) look, and it is still not as good as ‘out here’”. I.E. it is a solo experience, reality is better.
If I didn’t know anything about the Vision Pro it is the kind of review I would want to see before I made a decision to purchase one. It’s the good, the ‘could be better’, and the digital personas.
The Guardian has a useful summary of other reviews so far. TLDR would be “astonishingly good tech, but not perfect and too few apps so far”
So like a first gen product?
Funny how the Apple haters are taking the worst out of the reviews on other forums, while people who like Apple products seem to take the reviews as very positive.
And here is John Gruber’s review. If you like watching movies, it seems like a good enough reason to get a Vision Pro.
And the truth about this device as it actually exists and is currently being shipped to customers is likely somewhere in between.
What’s best about it is what it promises about its successors; what’s worst about it are the concrete particulars of what it is right now.
