(also @bbech) Interesting. A visual wrapper around Homebrew stuff. As someone used to terminals and command line usage I don’t think I will be corking the bottle.
brew update
brew upgrade
brew search
and why is there a GUI for this? …
My experience is that some of those commands - search in particular - return absolute walls of text.
I’m perfectly-fine with the command line version, but I can see the benefit of a something like a scrollable list with checkmarks. This is especially true for people who aren’t far enough into command line stuff to have upgraded their terminal client.
less is more
I pipe the output of commands that produce large screeds of text thourhg less. Allows me to scroll back and forth. As does Terminal of course. But less lets me search through the text for things of note/importance.
Exactly. And to my reply to @kayg, that’s why there’s a GUI - because it’s not quite as simple as “brew update”, “brew search”, etc.
I believe the discounts are a rolling feature… if you look now, several more items are on discount
That would be me… (20 characters)
Thanks.
And is Cakebrew still in active development?
Ya know, I can’t tell… it looks like the app was last updated in 2021, but the developer’s website seems to indicate that he releases bug fixes “when necessary.” He is also behind Mastonaut and Noto, FWIW. I’ve never had an issue with it, but admittedly I don’t do much by the way of Homebrew…
There is grep
command to deal with wall of text:
$ brew search ping|grep gping
gping
When did this become a homebrew thread?
When there are not enough sales to talk about Is it too early for Black Friday sales or this is it?
Maybe this list will grow?
I think it was more of a “is it worth $25 for a GUI” discussion…
ProWritingAid has an early access Black Friday VIP discount that’s 50% off. Do you all have experience with Grammarly or PWA? I subbed to PWA for year last time but it always bugged out with my writing app of choice - Obsidian.
FWIW I love discussion about whether Black Friday deals are worth the money. It’s good to have some context from people with appropriate knowledge.
This might be useful for some Black Friday/Cyber Monday shoppers
I forgot to mention that you can compile Cork yourself for free. Instructions are provided on the Cork Github site.
I choose to pay as a way to support the developer.
Which terminal app do you use? iTerm?
Yeah, it seems to work well. I looked at some others, and my needs are pretty basic - I’d like it to allow basic UI customizations, remembering profiles, etc. iTerm handles it just fine.
