Does anyone use ScanSnap Home software?

A general comment. The software licensing issues reported generally happen when a company outsources the development to a third party and that third party is familiar with the story of IBM and Microsoft. It is poor planning on Fujitsu’s part.

I recently installed ScanSnap Home software but hate change, especially when it comes to scanners, printers, etc.

I used the “Scan to Print” often but cannot find it using the ScanSnap Home.
Does anyone know how to do this? I especially liked to scan a bunch of small receipts in their carrier and then Scan to Print so I could drop it in the appropriate file for my accounting purposes. I have several different projects at once so I can’t just scan the receipt as I have no idea where it goes.

I am 76 years old and not tech savy but still trying to learn as much as I can so if anyone can help I would appreciate it. I have learned a lot at MPU but still a lot of it goes over my head too.

In the Scan window, if you don’t have a Print Documents (like I have) then press the + button as shown:

In the new window, select “Scan to Folder” as the template, Change the name to “Print documents” or whatever you want to call it.

Then at the bottom under “Send To” select Printer. Press “Save” and you are good to go!

Hi, I followed your instructions but when I got to the bottom to the application it only gave me two choices: Scan to Folder and Scan to Email. Oh, and "None (Scan to file). There was no Select Printer.
How do I get the Select Printer into the Application list?

Try in ScanSnap Home, Preferences ( ⌘, ), Application tab. Click on “Add or Remove”. There should be a printing application in your home/Library/Printers folder that you can add.

I stumbled upon this thread while looking for alternatives to ScanSnap. I wasn’t aware of the licensing issue, but I tried the new ScanSnap Home software.

  • On the pro side, I find a bit more streamlined than the 32-bit software.
  • On the con side, I find it a bit too rigid: I don’t like the new “file manager” and I don’t like that I can’t truly quit the 64-bit software.

For example, I have no need for ScanSnap Cloud; I scan to my local Dropbox, so I didn’t sign up for ScanSnap Cloud. Yet, when you quit ScanSnap Home, all three ScanSnap processes are still running (see attached screenshot of Activity Monitor) — if you truly want to quit the app, you have to open AM, select the process and kill it—every time you after using your scanner. There is no reason for ScanSnap Home to keep running. If I want to quit the app, I should be able to do so (they don’t even have a Quit command in their menu bar dropdown.

I contacted support multiple times to fix this; although they are quick and polite to respond, after three updates, they still hadn’t fixed it. So… I reverted to the 32-bit version on Mojave (about a month ago). Not sure what to do when Catalina comes… still looking for alternatives.

It hardly matters that you can’t easily quit the ScanSnap Home software. It consumes no CPU when not scanning and only 100MB of RAM. Because it is running, you can quickly start scans by just opening the scanner and pressing the button.

Agree that for any advanced use (such as tying in with other applications) the file manager just gets in the way. It’s only useful if you use their workflow.

I know; not a lot of memory use; for me it’s more the principle: let me set preferences on how I want to run my apps and how I use them. I guess that’s what’s rubbing me the wrong way. In my day-to-day work and workflows, I have no use for using a scanner without computer.

Has anyone tried the ScanSnap Home software with the (original) S1300 (not the newer S1300i)?

I’m just wondering if the software is smart enough to know, even if you choose the S1300i as the model. The two models look identical, and my current S1300 is still working fine. Sort of hate to half to spend $240 to replace the hardware, for same function specs.

Also, I already own a copy of VueScan that I use for an outdated Canon flatbed film scanner. They have added support for the S1300. I tried it, and it does work. Will also do OCR (also works). The resulting scan does not look as nice (more faded, “papery” feel, similar to what you might get from a flatbed scan). It also makes a much larger file – 3.2 MB for a 2 page color scan, vs. using ScanSnap Manager, 788 kb – which actually looked better. But, it worked!

Yesterday, I installed latest version of ScanSnap Home released on NOV 6th and did the firmware upgrade on my ix500. Then I finally upgraded to macOS Catalina. I am happy to report and everything seems to be working fine. The ScanSnap Home software is a bit different than ScanSnap Manager, but I was able to scan several documents without any issues. Overall, things worked out much better than I expected.

I gave up on Scansnap Home after too many frustrating moments.
Also don’t like the ways it does file naming and management.

I am now using the Scansnap iX500 successfully with ExactScan Pro.
Nice and lean application with all the bells and whistles, fast scanning and it doesn’t slow down my machine.

Excellent news, thank you. Does ExactScan Pro perform OCR on the documents?

Yes it does. Also use PDF Pen Pro for batch OCR using a script in Hazel. Happens in the background and speeds up scanning. Alternatively there is Prizmo

I finally made the switch from ScanSnap Manager to ScanSnap Home. It looks like it didn’t convert my scanning profiles correctly. When I do a scan it goes directly into Paperless and it also scans to a folder so I can manually double-check that file and upload it to an expense reporting system. It seems that I can’t “Scan to Paperless” and “Scan to Folder” simultaneously. Does anyone have any ideas for a workaround other that scanning twice?

I, too, am disillusioned with my Scansnap, and the software is horrible. But I don’t think for me it makes sense to spend $69 to $99 for alternate software.

I have been increasingly using my phone to scan most of the things I need to scan, to the point that I have moved my Scansnap scanner off my desk to make room for my new typewriter (yes, you read that right). I don’t scan a ton of multi-page documents, and Scanner Pro has some sweet built-in animation that I can use in combination with Hazel and DevonThink to get stuff where I need it.

Since starting this thread in Oct 2018 I have grown used to ScanSnap Home. Having said that, I rarely go into the main desktop software and just use the menu bar app to switch profiles if I need to.

@backpacker I remember that Home does not convert profiles well and you need to set each up manually. This is a once only task and then all OK.

I use Hazel automation to file receipts but apart from that I get ScanSnap to place most scans on the desktop and I take care of it from then onwards.

The ScanSnap scanner is very good and I think that the Home software being poor just means that I don’t
go into it much and rely on other workflows.

My issue with it is that about half the time I go to scan something, the software crashes and the scan stops midway through. I have take the paper out, unplug the scanner from power for a few seconds, and plug it back in. The scan works flawlessly after that every time.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to set it up so the Home software doesn’t open every time I start a scan? I love the hardware but hate the software. If I can use the former without the latter, I’d love to do that. (But don’t want to spend $69-99 for other software.)

You can make it stop opening the ScanSnap Home software:

I think you just changed my life. Thank you!!

Well, try it first before making that claim. By the way, I haven’t noted any problems using it on the BigSur beta.
