How "Mainstream" Are MPU Listeners?

Over on Daring Fireball, John Gruber recently posted about the top 20 free and paid iPhone App Store apps.

I’m curious: how many of these apps do MPU listeners have installed or use regularly?

For the free apps, I only have one, YouTube (and YouTube TV). Now, I do use a few of the services that the free apps represent (I do use FB, but never on my phone; through a convoluted workaround, I don’t even have my FB password available on my phone; I also use Gmail, but through the native Mail.app). But none of the other top apps are on my phone.

For the paid apps, I don’t use Tonal Energy (metronome and tuner) myself, but I have bought it for my kids (violin and piano students), and not only do they find it extremely helpful, but every music teacher who has seen them use it has said something along the lines of, “woah, stop the lesson, what is THAT and how do I get it now?!?!” That’s the only one.

How about you all? Are we, as a group, outside the mainstream?

I double-checked my iPhone apps before responding. I use none of those apps on my iPhone. I’m clearly an outlier. :slightly_smiling_face:

We’re clearly grunge.

Other than brief info about users, I know nothing about anyone here. (Well, there is one prolific poster who excels at ongoing confession and revelation.) So, it’s a motley group.

I’ve got half of these installed but only WhatsApp gets used on a regular basis, and that’s to contact our daughter who lives in Bahrain. I much prefer to use a computer and use apps on my phone when there is no other choice. None of my frequently used apps are on this list. Overcast and Waze are probably used the most as they are running whenever I’m in the car.

Interesting:

  • Google Maps - because it has the only reliable traffic information in Ottawa
  • WhatsApp - when I’m out of country, since Apple’s Messages app doesn’t work when I don’t have my normal phone number
  • YouTube - when someone mentions a video to watch

Google Maps is the only semi regular app I use.

I have no idea, but considering we are an international group, I’ll take a guess:

Y = Yes. I think a significant number of MPU may use the app.
M = Maybe. I’m guessing at least some MPU might use the app

I only use 2 of these and both of them grudgingly.

I totally understand. I would like to replace one of Apple’s default apps.

But, in the words of the philosopher Jagger, “You can’t always get what you want”. :grinning:

I confess that I’ve become somewhat of a YouTube junkie but I don’t use any of the others.

Only two apps for me:

  • ChatGPT
  • WhatsApp

From both the free and paid apps list.

Does this qualify for not totally mainstream :upside_down_face:?

3 for me:
whatsapp
chatgpt
instagram

I am not allowed at the Cool Kids table.

I have none of the them.

Blissfully so.

As to the main question in the thread, I have around 10% of the “top 20”. Which means nothing specific to determine the standards of the group because (hint on how statistics work) I might be an outlier or I might represent the norm.

I use none of the apps listed. I do use Google, Gmail, Youtube and I have tried ChatGPT, but these are all websites for me, not apps.

Some of them I’ve never even heard of, like RedNote, Lemon8 and T-Life.

And I know people in Europe who use WhatsApp and Telegram, but I only use Messages and (reluctantly) FB Messenger. I don’t have the Facebook app installed on my phone, but I do have elderly relatives who equate the Internet with Facebook, and as people approach their 80s you have to go with what they know.

From free: ChatGPT and WhatsApp, both grudgingly, as well.

For paid, I own Paprika, Autosleep, Streaks, and Threema but only use Things 3 and iVerify.

I use none of the listed apps. I do use many of the social platforms on Firefox though. I read years ago the best way to engage with the socials on iOS is the websites on a third party browser. Zuck cant get his claws on your system.

But he sure tries.

The web is another matter. Its him getting into systems permission I’d like to mitigate since its within my control.
