iPad Pro M4 Thoughts

I couldn’t bring myself to watch it. I didn’t want to give him the click and I knew it would likely be full of mistakes that would leave me frustrated.

These guys don’t care about getting it right. And of course this is also true of the podcasters. I’ve lost track of the number of times they get it wrong because their job is to just casually riff with spicy outrage. It’s not journalism, it’s just pretend outrage entertainment. It’s unfortunate and it is a disservice to listeners and viewers but they get their paycheck and that’s what matters.

I have to wonder, are they actually this ignorant of how the OS works? Or are they deliberately misleading? Either way it’s damning. There’s no standard of professionalism - but again, anything goes it it gets them clicks.

He’s a YouTuber, a creative, an enthusiast. He is making a controversial video because it adds to the views.

Some of the most informative videos I’ve found are from people who aren’t full time YouTubers.

I just discovered this guy yesterday via a post he made on Threads. I’ve watched a couple of his videos and they are the best kind of YouTube: carefully crafted with an intention to be helpful.

Good video. I’ve been using my 2020 iPP every day since I bought it and I just learned a variation for the way I move files. Since two of the most active discussions right now are about the iPad I think I’ll concentrate on backups for the next couple of weeks.

Currently my Mac automatically backs up everything, including my data on Google Drive and iCloud. I’ve powered that down and will only use my iPad Pro for a while. I have two Samsung SSDs that normally stay connected to my Mac via a CalDigit dock. One contains the bulk of my active files and the other is a ChronoSync backup of all my data. My iPP now has access to everything when plugged into the dock.

I plan to use CCC Mobile backup for local backups. As for the rest, I’ve already tested using the Backblaze app to upload files to B2, and tried backing up Google Drive to iCloud.

What I hope to learn is how practical this is long term.

Re: the new Magic Keyboard, something I’m slightly worried about. Folks over at MacRumors Forums have started reporting issues with the aluminium part of the keyboard (around the trackpad area) scratching the screen.

While the rubber gasket around the keyboard seems to protect part of the screen, when the MK is closed, the iPad does not sit flush but is angled and sits right on the aluminium area (and anodised aluminium is harder than glass, which is bad). This was not an issue previously, as MK was not made of aluminium.

From the forums:

A picture of the damage (not the only one in the thread):

Any thoughts? Anyone noticed any issues over past several weeks of use?

So far, my KM is fine and I’ve been using it extensively. :crossed_fingers:t2:

I haven’t noticed any issues

Thanks for the responses. I got the MK as well, and the design does look potentially troublesome in this respect. Laptops have gaskets around the screen to create just enough separation between the screen and the aluminium when closed. In contrast, the iPad Pro sits directly on what is now the aluminium part of the MK.

We know the anodised aluminium is level 9 on the hardness scale, while the glass on the iPad Pro has been proven to scratch at level 6, making me a bit anxious. :face_with_peeking_eye:

“I plan to use CCC Mobile backup for local backups.“

How has this been working out for you?

The program works as advertised. It is a manual backup but you can schedule a reminder. Photos and files are separate backups and the app must remain open until backups are completed.

I keep all iPad files to be backed up in the Downloads directory and I have a target directory in an encrypted Samsung SSD. Photos & Videos back up to a separate directory on the SSD. My 2020 iPP doesn’t have thunderbolt so initial backups are slow (0.8 gb/minute), but subsequent backups are incremental.

I prefer keeping all my data in the cloud so it can be automatically backed up by my Mac, but when I’m off the grid, etc. this allows me to make a backup that I can keep separate or ship home, etc.

Thanks. I’m looking to do the same. I’m hoping the Devs will expand on the ‘elemental’ nature of v1 (with the help of Apple and maybe what I see coming in iPadOS 18). I think they realize the opportunity for growth with the direction of the iPad. I retired my Mac. So the ability to ‘erase and format’ external SSDs in iPadOS is great timing.

iPad Pro are so crazy expensive nowadays.

I often remind my wife to take extra care of our existing iPad Pro M2… I can’t afford another one… She loves using it at home. I personally dont see a need for one.
