Strange (or maybe not). When I first tried it, I did it on a folder that was an alias to a folder that resides somewhere else and it didnāt change the color of the folder on the desktop. It only changed it in the Finder in for the real folder. But as I was playing around with making folders icons based on your comment (which I had never heard of), I tried a different un-aliased folder and it worked perfectly.
