Let’s do an international comparison of cellular plans!

Out of curiosity, where are you from, how much do you pay for you cellular plan and what do you get for your money?

I start!

  • Country: Sweden
  • Monthly cost: $9.89 (90 SEK)
  • Data: 2GB
  • Calls: Unlimited
  • Texts: Unlimited
  • Special feature(s): Unused data is saved for subsequent months. Got 20GB when I started the subscription. Can cancel or edit my subscription at any time.
  • Country: U.S.
  • Carrier: Verizon
  • Monthly Cost - Phone: $50 (Account access $30, Line Access $20)
  • Monthly Cost - Watch: $10
  • Taxes and Fees: $14
  • Data: 8 GB
  • Calls: Unlimited
  • Texts: Unlimited
  • Rollover: Unused data rolls over to the next month only
  • Country : UK
  • Carrier : Vodafone
  • Monthly Cost - SIM ONLY : £16
  • Taxes and Fees : VAT included above
  • Data : 20Gb
  • Calls : Unlimited
  • Texts : Unlimited
  • Rollover : None

12 month contract, EU roaming included. If I go outside of EU, £6 per day to use.

It’s pretty overpriced in CZ, so I just live without cellular.

  • Country : Czech Republic
  • Carrier : Vodafone
  • Monthly Cost : $80 (1 777 CZK)
  • Data : 20GB
  • Calls : Unlimited
  • Texts : Unlimited
24 month contract, EU roaming included, 1000 minut of international calls,
  • Country : Sweden
  • Carrier : Telenor
  • Monthly Cost : $35 (310 SEK)
  • Data : 20GB
  • Calls : Unlimited
  • Texts : Unlimited
  • Rollover : None

12 month contract, EU roaming included, no extra charge for data, text or voice.

That’s a lot of different numbers to keep track of. What’s the difference between account and line access?

That EU directive is super sweet! Do you know what will happen when the UK exits?

So you only use your phone when there’s a WiFi?

$80 is really expensive! I feel sorry for you

Nice! How much of the 20GB do you use every month?

  • Country : Australia
  • Carrier : Vaya
  • Monthly Cost: $24
  • Taxes and Fees : GST included above
  • Data : 4GB
  • Calls : Unlimited
  • Texts : Unlimited
  • Rollover : None

I have no contract, my carrier is an online only Optus reseller, so I can’t walk into a store anywhere. I also supply my own phone.

I have no idea what the difference is. Cell phone plans in the U.S. are always changing, with terminology and charges that are opaque and poorly explained. The game is about finding a cheap plan with coverage in the areas one travels to.

Country : Canada
Carrier : Bell
Monthly Cost - $85 CAD
Taxes and Fees : included above
Data : 3 Gb
Calls : Unlimited within Canada
Texts : Unlimited within Canada
Rollover : None

24 month contract.
Canada seems to be one of the most expensive countries when it comes to mobile services.

Country : Canada
Carrier : Rogers
Monthly Cost - $90 CAD
Taxes and Fees : included
Data : 4Gb
Calls : Unlimited within Canada
Texts : Unlimited within Canada
Rollover : None

(Canada is awful when it comes to mobile costs. It’s so sad reading how much it costs in other countries)

Country : Australia
Carrier : Telstra
Monthly Cost - $140 AUD
Taxes and Fees : included above
Data : 60gb
Calls : Unlimited in Australia, unlimited to several overseas countries
Texts : Unlimited in Australia, unlimited to a few overseas countries

As part of the plan, I can upgrade to a new phone every year for a $130 fee. I can also share the data with my husband.

I’m a bit restricted in terms of networks, which limits providers.

  • Country : Australia
  • Carrier : Kogan
  • Monthly Cost : $24
  • Taxes and Fees : GST included above
  • Data : 17GB
  • Calls : Unlimited
  • Texts : Unlimited
  • Rollover : None

This was a 12 month plan. Kogan sublets from Voda. To be honest, it’s all gone pretty well. Only issue is when I get my new AW4, I’ll get the cellular version which Kogan doesn’t support.

  • Country : Japan
  • Carrier : IIJmio/docomo
  • Monthly Cost : $24 (¥2522)
  • Data : 6GB
  • Calls : None ($0.19/30 seconds)
  • Texts : Unlimited
  • Rollover : One month’s data

Open-ended contract, originally 6 months with pro-rated cancellation fee; both rare in Japan. I pay ¥700 (~$5) for the ability to make phone calls and ¥300 for voicemail. I’m using an online-only MVNO provider and have had a really great experience with them.

I am currently at 12.2 GB with four days to go before it resets back. The lower cap option is 6GB, and I kept creeping up to that (or above) quite often. Guess I should check out this YouTube thing the kids are talking about

Wow, you managed to use 12GB without watching youtube. Impressive!

Have you considered Vimla? 15GB for 210 SEK. If I refer you, you’ll even get an indefinite 10 SEK/month discount.

  • Country: Hong Kong
  • Carrier: Three
  • Monthly cost: US$17.35 (HKD136/month - admin fee is included)
  • Data: 3GB (throttles to slower data after 3GB)
  • Calls: 2,500 minutes
  • Texts: Not included (if used, about US$0.06 per text)
  • Special feature(s): 2-year contract. 4.5G LTE.

Plan does not include sending SMS texts - not an issue for many in Hong Kong as most use data-based messaging apps (Whatsapp, Wechat, Line etc). So SMS will be charged for each text sent. No charges for receiving texts.

I think many of us are still hoping for a second referendum on Brexit and a subsequent cancellation of the stupid mess.
