New Overcast app

Anyone else having issues where downloads are randomly failing? I have that issue and another download-adjacent issue where if I go to download an older episode I have to first tell it to cancel the download (that wasn’t happening) and then I can select the download option.

I do get the occasional download failure, I have it set to only download on WiFi though, so I suspect that if I leave the house or work mid download, it eventually fails.

Downloading on WiFi only was causing failures for me as well. It should be able to recover when WiFi resumes, but it doesn’t.

Overcast‘s price will be increased soon.

I’m surprised he hasn’t done it before now. But I have nine months to decide if I want to renew.

I’m liking Apple Podcast a lot these days because of its transcribing. And free. I’m not sure if Marco will lose customer if he increase price.

I think he should double it without doubt. It’s a great app and I use it on an almost daily basis.

Like all thing though, there is a point at which I’ll start to think about renewing though, I’m not quite sure where that line is though. $20, no sweat. $30, I’d probably renew…

But if it becomes too high for me I would probably just unsubscribe and use the free tier at that point which would mean that Marco is leaving money on the table. I suppose that’s always true and if you look at ATP member pricing, they supposedly received strong feedback in the survey they ran that many more people would subscribe at $5 a month (a 37% drop per member) but they didn’t even explore even dropping the price by $1 a month.

He’ll definitely lose customers, it happens when anything increases in price significantly. And he’ll also lose out if people unsubscribe in protest and then resubscribe later due to him then having to give Apple 30% of the Sub for the first 12 months instead of the 15% for a renewed subscription.

But if he puts prices up by 50% and loses even 10% of his customers he’d still increase his revenue significantly.

Let’s say he has 10,000 subscribers, that currently brings in $100k (ignore the App Store fees as this will be an equal comparion) per annum
He increases the annual fee to $15 but loses 1,000 subscribers, it’s still $135k per annum

I doubt an increase of $5 per year after 8 years with no increases loses him many subscribers, and for many of those, it’ll either be a protest unsubscribe, or people who genuinely can’t afford to pay the new amount.

Also remember that any subscribers who are lost who still use the app will still be served Ads (unless they purchased the 1 time $5 opt out back in the first couple of years) so they will still be generating some money for him, it’s gonna be a Net Win for Marco.

I’ve switched over to Apple Podcasts while the bugs get worked out of Overcast. I might not go back now, the transcriptions are really helpful, more than I thought they would be.

I’m considering ditching Overcast. So I tried out the Apple Podcast app recently and the UI feels a bit weird and clunky. At first, I didn’t understand the difference between my queue and the up next queue.

Yes, it was hard at first to make the switch, but then I realized it is the same exact UI as the Apple Music app. So once you grasp that, it makes more sense.

So have I. And I plan to continue subscribing to the same podcasts on both apps going forward because I’m constantly referring to the transcripts of non-tech news podcasts.

I also have went Apple Podcasts. It’s a bit to figure out how it works, but got it now. And the Apple Watch app just works. I always had issues with overcast and never got the Apple Watch to reliable work.

Just a random question for anybody that is using the new Overcast – is the option to download all past episodes for a podcast completely gone? Or did it get moved somewhere?

I can’t find it anywhere, looks like it is gone.

I think it’s gone. I noticed this last week.

Hmm…
I recently had a Tintin vibe (who doesn’t love Tintin? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ), so I subscribed to the “Totally Tintin” podcast, and I could download/mark all episodes as unplayed.
I don’t remember how, but it’s definitely there somewhere.

It was there, but it’s gone now.

One two Mastodon posts by Overcast I’ve asked the question of whether it can be re-added, but in typical Marco fashion they’ve been ignored. :pensive:

I recently switched to Apple Podcasts after Overcast kept giving me weird issues in playback. Not sure I’ll stick with it, especially if Overcast fixes keep coming, but for now Apple Podcasts is fine.
