New Overcast app

Does anyone have issues with Overcast and AirPlay? I am trying to determine if it’s just me or not, even though no other app I have seems to have as many issues as Overcast does.

I often AirPlay to a Sonos Five, and/or 2 Era 100’s in a stereo pair. The Five seems to be a bit more reliable, but the Era’s often won’t AirPlay from Overcast unless I open the Sonos app and then try again. But even then, there are little pauses if I open/close Overcast as it is playing. Also sometimes the stereo goes out of sync between the 2 speakers. Pausing fixes it. It’s gotten to the point where I have given up on it, but I otherwise like the app.

I would message Marco, but since he is pretty open about not reading support emails, so that seems pointless.

That said, there seems to be something going on with Era speakers, they don’t seem to be as reliable from what I have read elsewhere (Roon stopped working with Eras on their last update for instance). I know that my older Sonos speakers don’t seem to have as many issues with Airplay.

Have you switched the control in the settings?

I am sorry, but what do mean?

If you go into the settings in Overcast, go to Nitpicky Details and scroll down a little, there’s a toggle to switch on/off “Use Airplay 2”. It can cause problems for some people.

If it’s on (I think that’s the default) try switching it off.

And don’t be sorry

Does Apple Podcasts support playback at high speeds? That feature is what keeps me on overcast. Other apps do it too, but overcast’s implementation is best for me.

It doesn’t appear have variable speed playback on OSX Sequoia but it does have it on iPad os.

I still have a few months to go on my Overcast subscription but I think I will stay with Apple Podcasts. It’s a solid app and I really like the transcription feature.

Weird audio thing happening, and I think it’s primarily happening in Overcast but I’m not 100% sure.

I’ll be listening to a podcast through my AirPods Pro 2 and will take them out of my ears and put them in their case. Then audio will switch to playing out of my phone’s speaker. Much of the time I catch it, but others I’ve come back to my phone having played through a playlist.

I can’t pinpoint a “why” when it happens, but I’m almost certain it’s only Overcast that is doing this (I don’t notice it when I’m playing Music).

Anyone else?

It happened to me recently, but with the music app. Probably an iOS bug.

Yes, that’s an iOS bug. It happened to me more often a couple years ago. In crowds you might not notice the audio coming from your pocket for a few minutes. :frowning:

I’ve had this happen with Overcast and also with Plexamp and Prism in the last month or so, so I suspect it’s an IOS issue rather than an Overcast one.

What I’ve also had recently is Overcast suddenly decide to start playing the next podcast episode in my playlist even though the current one is not finished. It’s never happened before and now has happened 3 times in the last week. The episode I was listening to is still there at the point I was listening to.

Bizarre

This was happening to me a lot with Overcast’s last incremental update/current version. Last week I switched to Apple’s Podcast app. I’ll re-sub to Overcast in a few minths, but it’s been frustrating to use since the new rewritten version dropped.

Happens to me occasionally. Not consistently.

Thanks all! I’ll hope for an iOS update that fixes this. Super annoying!

+1 on no Overcast issue.

I have this issue with every audio app, no matter if it is Apple Music, Audible, Apple Podcasts, or Overcast. I have trained myself to stop the audio playback before taking out the AirPods. It was happening rarely before iOS 18, it is happening quite a lot after the update to iOS 18.

Unfortunately sometimes “it just works” is changing to “it just doesn’t work”… :person_shrugging:

Oh yes, this happened to me using Fubo on my iPhone. I was watching a football game in bed. I took out my AirPods which stopped the video and audio. I locked the screen put it on the charger and fell asleep. About an hour later I was woken up by the audio of whatever show was on Fubo playing through the speaker. That really pissed me off! It took awhile to fall back asleep.

How’s Overcast been going for people lately? I’ve been using Apple Podcasts but it keeps marking stuff as played when I’m not done with it yet :man_facepalming:

Fine for me, using it every day for multiple podcasts.

I’m not giving up on it for a few reasons, but with patiences it is almost back to normal for me. which sounds bad because it has taken months for the end user to be able to use the app like they did before the rewrite…

right now im just waiting on priority playlists sorting to work right. other than that everything is stable. specifically, I have a playlist that puts hourly news at the top of the playlists (and with the option to play the top episode next I should hear the hourly update when it is there and the current show finishes). I then have one specific podcast (hour hour long episodes each night) that is low priority so that it is the very last thing in the playlists to play at the bottom. in the middle is everything else sorted from oldest to newest. sounds good right

that is, until episodes download, the thing goes haywire, and it doesn’t recognizing my priorities and sorting. then I haver to edit the playlists, sort from oldest to newest (again) and it fixes itself until the next time I look at it.

I tired going back to Apple Podcasts but gave up on it again. I don’t know what is going on, maybe someone here can help, but it does not stay in sync. obviously listening to this show and reading here I know the usual steps. all devices up to date, syncing turned on etc etc

everything will be fine for a few minutes and then ill suddenly have dozens of unplayed episodes. then hundreds. I have tried marking all episodes as played (which takes FOREVER since there is no mark all for the whole library, just individual shows). I have tried unsubscribing entirely to every podcast then resubscribing. I used PEARCLEANER to uninstall all associated system podcast app files (containers?) and near instantly all devices will sync to an empty library, I start to rebuild, and by the end of the day it’s all gone to pot. the last time I gave up a few weeks ago I ended up with I think 40,000 unplayed episodes.

im no coder or IT but I can’t figure out how for years, with several devices, signed in and signed out, every troubleshooting known to man, and podcasts won’t sync. mail syncs. files sync. calendar syncs. reminders sync. contacts sync. messages sync. safari reading lists usually syncs. music library syncs… but apple podcasts randomly leaves me with hundreds and sometimes thousands of unplayed episodes that were marked as played the day before. then I give up for a year or two before trying again only to find the same problems.

it might be coincidence, but about year ago I guess, I email Tim Cook (sounds far reaching I know but he has replied to three of my emails over the years of things I have sent him or asked) and copied Cue and Craig hoping someone would get it FWD to them. I wondered if one of them sent it to some engineer thinking there must be something wrong with my account that is causing such chaos that I can’t see from my end. And what do you know, everything worked like it should for a while. and then suddenly one day it all collapsed again, I gave up again, and am still with Overcast.

Im Not a Power User of Podcast Apps - I just listen to shows I subscribe to when I want - so Ive not really been bothered by some of the glitches people have discussed - for ME, I love Overcast for the quality of the Audio and the Smart Speed Playback. Those features work great for me
