Sorry I didn’t see this earlier
It’s nice to have the snappiness of the new back end, but I am still adjusting to a bit of the UI.
Has anyone worked out how you can change the order of your playlists in the horizontal scroll? Mine are in alphabetical order and I can’t work out how to change it.
For example I’d like the “Queue” to be first as shown in the screenshot in Marco’s announcement post. Ten years of Overcast: A new foundation – Marco.org
Mine seem to show up in the order I had set up in the old app. I have not found a way to change the order in the new app.
Unfortunately, played episodes are not deleted “When Completed” although the setting is being chosen and active.
Yesterday’s release did fix quite a lot of things, but I am a bit puzzled how many rough spots are in this release. It feels like a beta. I like the new app, but it has some way to go.
I don’t think you can.
I’d love to only have one there now, including removing the 3 automated ones, and I’d like the lozenge design back as one on the left would look strange. But i’m just happy to have a single podcast playlist finally again.
I like quite a lot about the new app.
The extra taps and overall interface for the sleep timer (which I use every night) is a regression in its current form. I hope that receives some attention soon.
It’s an absolute disaster for me, even after the first patch. My sorting and download settings for playlists keep resetting back to defaults. And why on earth would the app move to horizontal scrolling icons for playlists? I could go on, but I won’t. I just want to easily listen to some podcasts like I could a couple of days ago
Might give Downcast a try as suggested above.
I’m trying to be patient with this app because I’ve used it for so long and any new gestures or interface elements go up against my muscle memory.
However, one thing I noticed this morning is that I was unable to play anything using Siri. Is that associated with a lack of shortcut support, or Is this another kind of bug?
I think I read somewhere that shortcuts are not supported right now, but it’s coming soon.
Full disclosure - I use and prefer Pocket Casts, but I do like to keep up to date on the other pod-catchers as well.
I wouldn’t hold out much hope.
The move of the Copy to/Move to playlist functionality which was on a button on the playlist screen which is now hidden two layers deep in menus was widely complained about on social media and that didn’t come back to a more easily accessible location unfortunately.
When the mark as played button was added, I had to switch to another app for a month to break my muscle memory before switching back.
This new version is still rough. I’ve had crashes with AirPlay.
I’m back considering Castro again.
I don’t ever use Playlists, but it seems like it’s not possible to make “smart playlists” of any kind, right? Also, as I’m looking at the ones I already have, I can’t tell how to delete them!
I haven’t started sorting the “keep x episodes” settings, but what I remember is if I said, “keep three episodes,” sometimes it would just make sure three episodes were downloaded. So, if one finished, it would download another older one, which I assume isn’t the intended behavior.
Playlists are working now (or at least they are for me) and they can be really smart. I just have one Playlists now with all my podcast episodes in with 3 different priorities and then within each priority, sorted by date.
You can’t delete the 3 built in playlists (Downloaded, In Progress, and Starred) unfortunately
The settings for how many unlistened to podcasts you retain have gone away, the use case was that if you have a high traffic (i.e. daily) and topical podcast, when a new one downloaded, it would delete the oldest downloaded one.
I don’t mind the way it looks, but really annoyed with a bug that new Overcast doesn’t play the next episode in the playlist. It just stops at the end of the current show.
I’ve toggled the ‘Stop After Each Episode’ option in the ‘Nitpicky Details’ settings, tried starting playback from different playlists (I mainly use ‘All Episodes’), forced restarted the app…but no luck (this is with the .1 bug fix).
Good thing my iPad hasn’t updated, I’ve exported the OPML file in preparation for jumping ship.
Out of curiosity, are you going to jump ship right away or give him a chance to fix the bugs? If you are a fan of the app, that seems like a quick process to give up already?
I’ve seen on Reddit that the bug might be due to the ‘Play Top Episode Next’ setting. I’ve now turned that off and hopefully it will make the app usable.
If that doesn’t work, I’ll probably start looking at other options within a week (my premium subscription expires in September). Running/driving with podcasts that keep playing is the most basic thing I expect from an app.
I’ll be staying with Overcast for now. My sub renewed a couple of weeks ago.
I’m having the same issue. It’s intermittent, but fails more often than not. It was really annoying when I discovered this bug on a last-minute road trip. First update doesn’t seem to have addressed it.
The most important feature to me in a podcast player is the audio quality, and I find Overcast to be far better than all other apps I’ve tried in this regard. I didn’t realize how much Overcast’s VoiceBoost feature was improving the quality of a few of the shows I listen to until I tried Apple Podcasts and PocketCast recently. I have fairly simple demands on organizing and building playlists, so maybe that’s why I’m less affected by any rough edges on those features. But I’d be willing to suffer a lot of rough edges to keep the highest quality audio piping into my ears!
That’s what Marco said on ATP.
