New Overcast app

Playlists seem to be shown alphabetically. So, to customise the order, you can prefix the name of the custom playlist with a number e.g. 1. Favourite playlist 2. Second favourite 3. Etc.

This will mean you can determine the order.

That’s what I’ve done for now.

Not for me. They are shown the way I have set them up in the previous version:

  1. Queue
  2. Playlist starting with “W”
  3. Playlist starting with “R”
  4. Playlist being called Tech

I have not tried to edit their names, maybe they would change to an alphabetical order after an edit. :person_shrugging: I do not want to try that because I want to keep this order if possible. And as long as there apparently is no way to change the order manually in the current version, I will leave it untouched. Be it as it may, there still seems to be something like a property “file” that has the order of playlists stored inside. Which gives me hope that the feature of manually sorting stuff will come back.

Marco Arment seems to be quite pleased with the major rewrite and the celebration of the app’s 10th birthday: “It’s fast. REALLY fast. And there’s more coming soon.” The thing with this particular developer is that he does not communicate much with his users. I am confident that Marco Arment will address the bugs. I will wait some time how everything is developing in the next weeks. There need to be updates in the nearer future and I think that the developer is aware of that, too.

@RDK - regarding VoiceOver and chapters:

EDIT:

The ATP episode already was mentioned above. For those who would like to hear from Marco Arment himself about the new release (URL with timestamp to listen to the Overcast talk):

So far turning off ‘play first episode next’ is keeping the audio flowing. I’m sure we’ll get back to the previous version’s functionality soon.

Mine are sorted as they were before (not alphabetically), and due to the app’s bugginess, I’m hesitant to mess with playlists right now.

I don’t think this release was ready for prime time. Marco, as a solo dev, probably thinks this beta-ish release will be the quickest way for him to iron out all the bugs after receiving feedback.

That hasn’t worked for me.

Noticed that on a playlist (aka queue) if I finish an episode it will disappear like normal. However, if I go to the list and swipe over and check it as finished it just gray it out, but does not remove the episode from the list. Can anyone else reproduce this? This is a change from previous.

The feature I hope is just glitched is the greying out of playlists that are empty. When my playlists empty out now, they stay the same color. It’s a little irritating to have to go into the playlist to see if there’s anything new.

I’m experiencing that as well.

A short question for everybody using the new Overcast app:

I have set the app settings to “Delete When Completed”. While the app is deleting completed episodes from their playlists, the played episodes are not deleted from my devices. All of them are sitting there in the “Downloaded” playlist and piling up on my iPhone. I have to delete them manually. My question: does Overcast delete completed episodes on anybody’s device automatically? If so: what are your settings for “Delete”?

I have it set to delete after 24 hours and it’s not working for me either.

Too many keystrokes now to accomplish what I used to do in one or two (at most).

Been an Overcast user since day one.

A few things I’ve noticed/missed:

  1. I really miss “swipe left to mark as listened,” am I just not seeing it?
  2. I am having trouble with podcasts not going away from the main view after I’ve completed listening. Did this ever get resolved?
  3. When I listen on my iPad every so often the audio drops out for a moment. I think it’s happening when the iPad is getting an incoming message. I wonder if it’s a process priority or resource thing? I’ve never experienced this when listening on phone, and never before on iPad before the redesign.
  4. Chapters seem harder to find, but I eventually do.

I am having the same issue. I have to mark the podcast as played and then delete it. I don’t like this change.

Those can also listen to “Under the Radar” episode 298:

According to Reddit Marco’s released a testflight version that fixes this bug (not deleting episodes). Hopefully we’ll see some of these fixes in the released version soon.

Thank you for posting the link! Marco Arment seems to be working hard on fixing stuff according to those who are part of his TestFlight. Apparently three builds within one day? Sounds good.

Version 2024.7.2 (1010)

  • Fixed custom per-podcast deletion modes
  • Fixed Mark as Played not deleting the episode in delete-immediately mode
  • Fixed stale artwork/chapters being shown while the current episode downloads
  • Fixed the lack of background refresh (…by implementing background refresh)
  • Added pull-to-refresh in playlists
  • Added Send Logs option to Feedback screen

Also from that Reddit Thread:

Version 2024.7.2 (1012)

  • Added Intents/Shortcuts support
  • Added more swipe actions on episode cells
  • Added playlist reordering and toggles for built-in playlists in Customize Home Screen
  • Empty playlists are now gray
  • Playlist widgets now resume the last-played episode if available
  • Fixed Remote Episode Skip
  • Fixed notifications not opening their episode when tapped

Still missing, coming in future builds:

  • Storage Manager and Data Usage screens

I still wonder a little how these bugs were not noticed before the release and not even mentioned in the articles and podcasts talking about the Overcast release. Weird.

I am so looking forward to the new version when it materializes (hopefully soon). If all this will be working again soon, I will be happy again.

I think it’s a mess. If Facebook, Twitter, or Apple would have released an app in this state, they would have been lambasted. I can understand that with a closed small participation beta, some combinations of controls having impacts would be missed, but Podcasts not being deleted after being listed to, Playlist ordering just not working, not playing the next episode when set to play the episode at the top of the playlist next…

I still think it was rushed out to meet the 10th anniversary despite it not being ready.

I am glad that Marco is working on fixing these isues in short order though.

Marco did say in that “Under the radar” episode that releasing on this specific day was rather important to him, so there might be some truth in your statement…

I think a lot of these bugs are the sorts of things that you just assume are there, given your previous experience with the app. They only show up on a more thorough analysis.

But when you’re dealing with a ground-up rewrite, there’s no guarantee that any given feature will be present in the rewrite.

That said, the most interesting comment I saw on Reddit was somebody asking why the fixes are in a Testflight, and the broken app was a worldwide instant release.

I can’t tell if the queue is broken in this app, or if I don’t have it set up correctly. I have the setting ticked to play the next episode after the previous one ends, and I have been adding items to the queue. However, when an episode ends, it stops with about one second remaining, and it never completes and moves to the next episode, whether it’s from a different different podcast or the same same one.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem? I wonder if I should reset all the settings and start over.
