Passwords vs 1Password

I use both (not for the “multiple basket” reason) and I think 1Password is the better app…but I am getting tired of subscriptions. I am using the Apple version for a year as well to test it to see if I want to drop 1Password, even if I don’t think it is the better app. On the other hand, I use Windows and Android, so 1P makes more sense for me. Also, I really don’t have much to say about 1P, or feel passionately enough to want to convince anyone.

Ah, you edited your post but I’ll add my bit anyway.

I hear you. Forums are always changing, and this is a relatively young one that went through a big transition from the Facebook group. The move to subscriptions for longstanding apps is also some legitimate community trauma since it means fewer shared experiences due to the customer bases becoming more segmented into specialized interests.

The media people experience outside the forum also has affected it; e.g. Cal Newport’s reach is significantly larger than it was a decade ago, so more people espouse his ideas here, which has made them a bigger part of the culture. Just picking out one of many influences. David’s quitting law and clear expression of purpose in the last couple years is another major one. We try to express changes in viewpoint through software selection.

I also appreciate that this thread is partly about trying to save a few dozen bucks a year just ‘cuz.

Yes, sorry for the edit, but people here don’t seem into forum navel gazing, so I figured it was kind of pointless. (Except for you and I apparently.)

I do think there is a big disconnect from podcasters/bloggers and the general public who have subscription fatigue. On the other hand, as much as you see people complaining about them, they seem to be working for the developers. I thought NotePlan’s subscription price increase a couple of years ago when he doubled it, was crazy, but apparently his users were fine with it (it is a great app, just too expensive compared to its competition for me).

I do wonder how much the paid discord has hurt this forum. I know forum and Discord users are generally not the same kind of users though. Also no idea how many people use the Discord.

I have never heard of Cal Newport, so off to do a Google search. (Edit: ah a productivity guy, that explains why.)

Does the general public have subscription fatigue? It’s been my experience that most people don’t purchase many/any applications for their personal devices, other than games. And maybe a copy of MS Office for those that do more than surf and social media.

If their company doesn’t pay for apps a lot of people do without.

My guess any subscription fatigue in the general public is due to Amazon Prime, Walmart+, Spotify, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Netflix . . . etc.

But I could be wrong.

Yes, sorry you’re right. No regular person I know buys apps at all (although they will pay money for pay to win games). I mean more of the podcasters and their listeners. Tech people. This forum is arguably more about productivity than tech though as well, if that matters.

New shiny has quite a lot of appeal around here  It’s also cheaper than the alternatives and probably easier to get family and friends onboard. I’m not switching to it from a paid solution any time soon, but I can see why people around here are trying it.

So much this! I had family 1Password and my mom freaked out when I set it up for her to the point I just gave up. Having shared password vault with her lets me help with stuff. I setup Passwords as she is part of my iCloud family and she loves it. I can use either, so my wife and I just moved our stuff to Passwords and the world is happy.

I am one of the users of Apple’s Passwords app and have never used 1Password.

At this time, the passwords just needs a secure vault but some would say you can do that in Notes but I would prefer if Passwords app has that. Apart from that I really like the app.

Is it possible to use Apple PW on one device and not sync it with other devices? For example, just for your iPhone but not iPad and Mac.

When you turn off iCloud Keychain, password, passkey, and credit card information is stored locally on your device."

Note: Any passwords, etc. that have already synced will remain on your other devices.
