For those that want to go full in on Proton (Pass plus Mail, VPN, Drive, and Calendar): they have a 40% sale right now.
From the docs it doesn’t appear to have the ability to originate an email from an alias in the same way that Fastmail does.
Thanks for the link. One section caught my eye “You can select your preferred Forwarded to address from the dropdown menu. “
Agreed that It would be useful to send an email from the proxy address.
It’s seems it’s browser extension only and doesn’t currently support Safari, that is a deal breaker for me.
I assume for the 1Password /Fastmail integration I would need to sign up for at least the $3 Fastmail subscription. I suppose I could then forward all emails to my gmail inbox.
I just really want cheap alias support with 1Password
Do you find using email aliases all that useful? I’ve tried hide-my-email, vendor specific addresses (walmart@mydomain, etc), throwaway email accounts, etc. And they all seem more trouble than they are worth.
I’ve had a gmail account for nearly 20 years and an email account at my personal domain for amost as long. Everyone except friends, family, banks, and doctors, etc. gets my gmail address and I still only get a dozen or so spam messages each week. None of which reach my gmail Inbox or get forwarded to my personal account by server side rules.
Rather than deal with alias addresses I just check my gmail account every week or so.
Currently I use one alias for all online services.
Usually my spam rate was manageable, but recently it really started to annoy me.
I never tried the “nuclear” approach of having one email alias for each online account. I’m motivated to try it now.
Edit: typo.
Their use isn’t limited to spam. By using different email addresses, you make life difficult for the whole adtech world, data brokers, etc, who often use your email as the common key for building a dossier on you.
I thought browser/device fingerprinting had become the most common way of tracking us in recent years. That and purchasing our information from online vendors, credit card companies, loyalty cards, food delivery services, etc.
I gave up fighting adtech a long time ago. Anyone who wants to know about me could just ask amazon.com. They know just about everything including the size clothes I wear, the kind of food I eat, the books I read, and the movies I watch. I stopped using cash during covid so I’m sure by now my entire life has been digitized.
The positive is that you need not worry about digitising it yourself!
Ok, so this is a bit weird. I feel like Proton Pass could be in beta right now, but anyway.
To send email from an alias, don’t use Proton Pass. Instead, download SimpleLogin (Powered by Proton) and log in to that using your Proton Pass credentials. Within that app, you’ll be able to send to the registered email address.
It looks like it works and I only assume this functionality will make it to the native Pass app and other places someday.
Are you saying that (currently) if I sign up for Proton Pass for $1 a month I can then login into Simple Login and use that without the need for a Simple Login subscription? I can then just ignore Proton Pass and continue using 1Password
Ok, thought I would do some research. I signed up for Proton Pass. When I create email aliases in Proton Pass I can see these in the SimpleLogin app (this is all on the iPad). I seem to be able to add more than ten aliases in Proton Pass (as expected), however I can’t add any new aliases from with SimpleLogin once I have reached ten (although I can see more SimpleLogin if created through Proton Pass).
Creating email aliases within the Proton Pass is really easy, there is a separate flow (you don’t have to create a login). So I can’t ditch Proton Pass and just use the SimpleLogin app to create the aliases after signing up for Proton Pass.
However, I can just use Proton Pass to create my aliases and then use 1Password as my password manager,
It then hit me that Apple has its own Hide My Email feature as part of iCloud+. Am I missing something or would this serve my needs as a Email alias generator to work with 1Password? I am pretty much all in on Apple and use Safari on Mac,iPhone, iPad
Personally, I choose to decouple some of my sensitive emails and passwords (e.g., banks) from Apple for security reasons.
I’d imagine that if you are going to stick with 1Password, the iCloud aliases would do the job for you.
Fingerprinting is a thing, but it’s usually unique to the org doing the tracking. When they start exchanging/selling data, the email is often the unique key used to merge the data.
Phone numbers are an issue too, but they’re not required on all sites.
Another reason to use per-site emails is in case of a hack. Your data from one compromised site is often used to try and get into other accounts.
Amazon tends to keep its data to itself, you should be more worried about what all the obscure brokers know and infer about you. See this article, for example.
I understand why people give up, though. It’s an uphill battle. But legislation is changing and we can still disrupt it all more than we think.
Well that was an encouraging read (not!).
It reminds me of the old adage, “if it’s online it’s not private”. It is scary though how granular the collection is. I liked the idea of banning targeted advertising.
It does make me wonder what will happen to Apple’s privacy as it starts maximising the advertising sector?
Bob Morris’s rules of computer security:
“Do not own a computer;
Do not power it on;
and do not use one.”
In case you don’t recognize the name:
Brilliant! But is it even possible to live without some form of digital life?
Doubtful, but it is the only sure way to secure a computer at this point in time.
I prefer per-site emails because I’ve found offenders like PayPal and myfitnesspal which share or leak emails. Then I can shut off the email and delete the account.
Can’t make the change. 1Password has so many more features that I actually use/need. Might jump when more features roll out.
