Screenflow 10.5 (first update in two years) is released. Of course if you prefer your apps from the Mac App Store, you are out of luck. Still old version 10.0.10 there…
I guess I am the only one still using this. I have emailed Telestream’s support and sales, and as is the case for the past 18 months or so, they don’t respond anymore. Sad.
I don’t not what went wrong but the last time I upgraded my microphone started making me sound like Oscar the grouch.
No help from them.
Never again.
Just Another Update.
In their license page, they say if you bought the MAS version, they will switch your license to the website, but you lose the 5 machine permission and are once again limited to 1 machine. I emailed them and said I would like to do it. No reply. I wonder if an Mac App Store refund is still possible.
I recall a few months ago, one of the podcast hosts @MacSparky (?) remarking they had moved on from ScreenFlow. However, when I search the Relay.fm site none of the show notes that I can find hint at anything else.
This is relevant because my wife wants to record: PowerPoint, Video and Audio. Currently, the only option appears to be Camtasia (since we have an older license).
Found it: Mac Power Users #793: Accurate, Not Boring - Relay someone mentioned ScreenStudio: https://screen.studio/
If anyone’s interested, since the latest update, we’re still using ScreenFlow at ScreenCastsONLINE - although kicking the tyres on other options. Yes, trying to get support from them in the last couple of years has been an issue, however the relief when the latest version dropped…
Was very worried it had become vaporware, and whilst I’ve tried alternatives (including the expensive Camtasia), nothing feels as easy to use as ScreenFlow for me and I know my team feel the same.
Will be keeping an eye out over the next year though for more regular updates
I’m using Screen Studio. It’s not the completer package that Screenflow is and requires us to use a second editor (Final cut or DaVinci) to finish. It makes it more work, but the final video looks better.
I’ve recorded and edited hundreds of videos in ScreenFlow over the past 15+ years. I began exploring alternative options when support and updates for ScreenFlow began to wane.
I recently followed @MacSparky’s lead and now do all my screen recording in Screen Studio. I really enjoy using Screen Studio; it has a more “intelligent” way of handling things like zooms and keeps the pointer movement smooth, even when editing out flubs. I’ve also been very impressed with the folks at Screen Studio; they’re very responsive and helpful and working hard to make Screen Studio even better (check out their roadmap for more info).
I currently import Screen Studio-generated videos into ScreenFlow and use ScreenFlow to add features like title slides and animations, as well as to create chapters for longer videos. I’ll likely continue to do my screen recordings in Screen Studio indefinitely. I may replace ScreenFlow with Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve soon to take advantage of the more advanced features (e.g., advanced audio editing) these apps offer.
p.s. To give a couple of examples, the Unlock the Power of Planned Dates in OmniFocus Quick Tip video and all of the videos for Travelling with OmniFocus were created using Screen Studio + ScreenFlow.
This reply is both for Tim and @MacSparky … I’m super busy now and don’t have time to test run Screen Studio until October. Just some follow up questions until I can test:
- Who are the folks at Screen Studio? From my initial look it seems to be one person. (This isn’t necessarily bad, but I’m not seeing a “team”)
- It seems like Screen Studio is mainly a video capture software (perhaps albeit better than ScreenFlow), but not great at video editing. Is this right? One of the things I love about ScreenFlow is both capture and the super easy editing capability.
- Or is Screen Studio also good at basic editing but not at adding key features? Typically I don’t need to do much audio editing except taking out the audio/video as needed when doing basic editing.
I’m trying to avoid adding apps to my collection unless highly needed.
Many thanks in advance.

According to LinkedIn, Screen Studio was founded by Adam Pietrasiak. I’ve had contact with a few people at the company; all have been very responsive and helpful.

In some cases, I use a video rendered using Screen Studio without involving any other apps (e.g. an animated GIF to include in a social media post or a video message I’m sending to a colleague). Screen Studio doesn’t have nearly as many features as ScreenFlow. This is a strength in some ways, as Screen Studio essentially automates some things that I used to do manually. The result is a more polished video that takes less time to create.

Screen Studio excels at recording the screen and providing efficient editing tools. It doesn’t provide the granular control that ScreenFlow does, which I’ve come to see as a benefit, as I tend to get bogged down fiddling with details.
For example, Screen Studio provides a way to automatically zoom in on the area of the screen that I’m highlighting. I can go with Screen Studio’s default, or tweak the zoom level and position. I can also choose to record myself on video and position the video in a corner of the screen. It doesn’t provide pixel-level control over the specific placement of the video, but the placement it provides works well for me. It’s also very easy to trim unwanted parts of the video, and Screen Studio does a good job of smoothing out cursor movements.
To summarize, I perform most of the editing in Screen Studio. I bring the rendered file(s) in ScreenFlow and combine them with things like the intro animation and, if needed, add chapters. In some cases, the ScreenFlow file includes multiple video files. Multi-clip recordings are coming to Screen Studio, which will add a layer of convenience.
p.s. The following video provides a good overview of Screen Studio’s features. It was recorded about a year ago and doesn’t include all of the latest features, but it will give you a good idea of how Screen Studio works.
Tim: Thanks so much for your reply! It is thoughtful and answers most/all of the questions I had. (Note: I haven’t watched the video yet.) The features you describe, like auto zoom in, would be fantastic for me. Once my heavy work period is over, then I’ll definitely download and explore Screen Studio.
And, now, if I can bug you about another Screen Studio issue. I generally prefer to buy an app outright. But I see that Screen Studio only includes 1 year of updates. In some cases this would be just fine for my needs. But since it’s so new perhaps the subscription approach would be better. They are both about the same over a 2-2.5 year period. Which approach to purchasing did you choose? (I’m theoretically a “hater” of subscriptions, but in this case it might be the better way to go … at least for a 2-3 year period.)
Tim as usual, you’re generous with the depth of your response. I’m going to abuse the fact that as a fellow Canadian, you will keep on offering help far beyond the call of duty.
My is about to start recording a course that will involve:
- PowerPoint or Canva
- Video - via my InstaLink 360
- Audio - via a Rode Wireless microphone
Sometimes, she will want the slide to be full screen and her face to the side. Other times she her face will be the whole video.
is ScreenStudio good for this? The two things that I wonder about, does it keep three streams separately? Does it allow the presenter to be the full frame.
Happy to help!

This was one of the first questions I had when I was evaluating Screen Studio. It’s possible (and quite easy) to alternate between full screen camera, camera in corner, no camera, etc. You’ll find more info on “dynamic camera layouts” (including a short video) here:
I paid the $US229 “Pay Once” which gives me renewals for a year. I can optionally pay $US109 to continue to receive updates for another year once my first year is up.
Since I largely pay for my shoes by creating content, paying this fee is a no-brainer if it means I can produce high-quality content efficiently using an app that’s well supported, in constant development and delightful to use. I’m happy to help fund the developers work in support of their continued success.
This price is likely less compelling if Screen Studio is an app that’s used occasionally. In this case, it could work to pay for a month at a time or use an alternate app, such as the built-in screen recording or CleanShot.
ScreenFlow 10 is currently $US169 (no subscription), and may be worthy of consideration with the caveat that the future of this app is uncertain (at least from my perspective). Telestream also charges an addition $US39/year if you want “Premium Support”.
I hope this helps!
Tim: Thanks so much. Very useful information. I didn’t realize there was a $109 option to continue (instead of $229 each year if you choose to get upgrades).
I’ve watched the video and it does look compelling. I look forward to playing with it come October. Hopefully @mievison will post his experiences playing with ScreenStudio as well … it would be nice to hear from another newcomer about their experiences.
At the ScreenFlow Facebook page it was mentioned the “old” CEO of Telestream was a big ScreenFlow fan, and the “new” CEO wasn’t (or didn’t care). However, the old CEO is now the new new CEO … so life may be breathed into ScreenFlow again … even if it takes a number of months to materialize as truly upgraded.
I think that means “Any Support”.
If you have a Setapp subscription. They’ve just introduced an app called Focusee. I’ve been using it to make some videos from my screen recordings, and it seems to work pretty well. A lot of the reviews say that it’s better than Screen Studio and it less expensive
By the actual definition of the word, “premium” doesn’t have to mean anything other than “you pay more.”
