Thrilled! With Obsidian+Readwise+Zotero Workflow

There’s a song from Dinah Washington humming in my head … “What a difference a (few hundred) day(s) make. (A few hundred) 24 little hours …”

One reason I have stayed with Bookends is that it allows me to determine the location of the PDF files, which I keep in an iCloud folder which is, in turn, indexed by Devonthink, making it easy to create a notes folder for, well, notes. Zotero has a web capture feature, which I like, and I think its note-taking functionality is better than Bookends, but Zotero insists on giving my files unfriendly names. Devonthink also does web capture, so all my research notes are in one place, and all the citation metadata is in one place.

So far this system has worked for me. Is it perfect? No. Devonthink’s markdown UI has gotten better, but it’s still not as good as Obsidian, and DT still doesn’t have an easy graph view, let alone a canvas view. These are drawbacks for a visual thinker like myself.

So: Bookends + Devonthink + Scrivener.

(I tried replicating the Scrivener experience in Devonthink in order to cut down on the apps I use, but it just isn’t the same.)

FWIW I know several people are happy with my automation that makes it easy to use Zotero as an inbox for Bookends:

It’ll require some fiddling and I can’t provide warranties or customer service, of course, but it might help you!

Fascinating. I’ll take a look when I can. Well done!

Just starting my masters and trying to organize my research and wring process. This article came up while searching Readwise and Zoetero with Obsidian so thought I would comment with my thoughts I’m trying to work through.

I have went from Pocket to Readwise Reader a few years ago and love it for highlighting and resurfacing quotes from books with Readwise. Some day I need to get my previous 10 years of evernote clips ported over but that’s a separate issue.

I’ve use Workflowy as my bulletjournal / second brain daily for almost a decade and love the speed and and single page search. Going into different notes and files has always seemed cumbersome and time consuming when I search for something compared to scrolling a single page.

However, now considering obsidian for more polished thinking / writing using atomic notes and zettlekastin method to build into longer peaces and automatically publish to a digital garden.

As I collect my research and readings, I’m still trying to determine if I should add Zotero to separate scholarly articles or stick with just Readwise Reeder for everything.

This forum has given me a lot to dive deeper into. Thanks for all the comments so far.

Then again …

You might enjoy this thread, where I asked a similar question.

And as I said, “ [quote=“Bmosbacker, post:1, topic:38213”]
I will test this workflow for a while before making any decisions.”
