What's your RSS setup right now?

Hello,

I’ve been struggling to find and ideal RSS setup, and would like some suggestions.

I’ve tried a few things:

1 - New Reeder alone:

PROS: nice interface and layout. All-in one app (good to bookmark and/or save links for later). Also, it just got updated to glass interface.

CONS: the “feed” seem to me like scrolling another social network, which I’ve been trying not to anymore.

2 - Classical Reeder

PROS: doesn’t fell like a social network

CONS: no updates

3 - Unread + Goodreads

PROS: I think the design is a little bit confusing and clunky.

Would you mind sharing your setup right now?

I use Miniflux (backend) and Reeder Classic (client; on iPhone/iPad/Mac).

I hope Reeder Classic stays working for a while, without any updates…

I still am using Reeder Classic, but I confess I’m a bit disappointed it won’t be getting updates…

What app do you use to save links?

I have tried Reader from Readwise and the new Reeder but Classical Reeder is what works best for me. Since I also use DEVONthink I have some times toyed with the idea of ditching Reeder but since RSS doesn’t work in DEVONthink To Go I have not done it. This might change when the next version of DEVONthink To Go is released. Of course DT is much more than a RSS-reader and a bit over the top for using only as RSS-reader. Also, I don’t actually know if there are plans for RSS support in the upcoming releases of DT To Go.

I love using Devonthink for my RSS reader. I tried Reeder, and while it’s certainly snazzier looking, it can’t do all the things that DevonThink can.

I use DT for certain feeds but I want to have RSS support on mobile before using it as my main “hub”.

I tried the new Reeder and it’s not for me. I don’t like that I can’t change the view to something more compact, and I don’t like the lack of unread counts. I can’t tell what I’ve seen vs what I might be seeing again, and I don’t like social media-type scrolling. Minor unpopular opinion, it scrolls in the wrong direction.

I’ve also been having a lot of issues with Reeder (both old and new) not grabbing entire articles. I know this is an RSS issue but some apps seem to handle it better than others.

Your post is timely though as I decided to give Unread another try last night. I’ve used it in the past and liked it, and now that Reeder classic isn’t being updated, I figured why not.

I have no interest in paying $40 a year for it, but the free version seems to work just fine. It also - at least on initial use - seems to be pulling in entire articles. My evidence for this is the NY Times opinion feeds which were cut off in Reeder but not so far in Unread, unless I am mistaken.

I find the apps like NetNewsWire get a lot of praise, but the interface looks like something from iOS 10. Personal opinion of course.

I used the new Reeder for a while then reverted to NetNewsWire. It won’t win any design awards but it is functionally effective.

@zkarj - you posted that 2 mins after I posted: “I find the apps like NetNewsWire get a lot of praise, but the interface looks like something from iOS 10. Personal opinion of course.”

So I may be on to something. :joy:

New Reeder as a “replacement for YouTube” to opt out of the algorithm. Though I wish there was a way to block my subs shorts. If there was a download feature I would even make it my Podcatcher as well. Opted out of the Social media posts except for a few real-life people in my life that actually use them. (I have an old Professor who is a Bluesky and Threads Poster and is doing amazing work.)

Currently trying to figure out a solution on how to get my RSS feeds to my Kobo Reader to become the 21st Century equivalent of the old man reading the paper with a black cup of coffee on Saturday morning. Maybe I am dumb but I don’t fully understand Instapaper and that has native integration after Mozilla killed Pocket.

Why ReadKit over other apps?

I absolutely agree with you. I don’t like the media-type scrolling in new Reeder. It’s a shame, because I really like the interface.

Do you use Unread to save for later?

What are you using as a read later app?

I empathize with your old man reading the paper aspiration.

I’ve been going back to physical media and am loving it.

My workflow is spending the week saving articles to read on Saturday morning sipping my stomach hurting cup of coffee.

I moved feeds to NetNewsWire and iCloud last year. I read it on iPad and add feeds on Mac. It’s not installed on the phone.

Previously I was trying Readwise Reader RSS (not a good fit for how I read RSS.) Before that I was using Reeder with NewsBlur as the backend.

Instapaper used to be able to auto-send digests to Kindle. I don’t know if Kobo is similar, but the digest was great. It would be one document with 10-20 articles in it. They would be automatically marked as read in the service, so, you’d flip through this thing like a magazine (no having to select articles to read) and anything you didn’t get to would be automatically tossed.

Also, if you have a laser printer, printing articles two-to-a-side duplex and reading through the stack is still an option. I get through a lot digitally, but it’s worth printing when several pages long or containing difficult math.

I don’t save a whole lot so I haven’t had to yet, but I would likely just use the share sheet and share the article to Readwise Reader.

I prefer its UI—far more “standard-macOS”—simple, gets out of the way, lets me read.

I just asked about RSS in Devonthink To Go in the Devontech forum. It is planned but it will take some time before it is added. https://discourse.devontechnologies.com/t/reinstall-safari-extension/85102/72
