And probably overlooking Apple’s strategy of not letting product categories overlap too much, in this case (the iPad) because they don’t want to give you reasons to skip buying a Mac, too.
Totally in love with the upcoming iPhone mirror. I’ve hankered for a way to fluidly control my iPhone during the day when I’m working on the Mac. I’m heavily keyboard/Mac oriented and it bugs me to have to pick up my phone to use apps that only work on the Phone.
Eg. I may want to be playing podcasts on Snipd (no mac or web version yet) as a useful example.
And my other favorite announcements:
- Airpods voice isolation and head gestures look awesome!
- Remote control for user support cases! Can’t be believe this took so long!
Also…the Journal app still isn’t on iPad or Mac. Although iPhone mirroring will at least theoretically finally allow people to use it on the Mac.
Don’t know, right now we have Sam Altman and Jensen Huang.
The IBM 360 at my university was behind concrete block walls but I hear what you are saying. Personal computers are 47+ years old and even Apple seems to be expecting glasses, or something else, to eventually replace them.
I’m not impressed even with the iPhone implementation so far. It will take much more to move me away from my current journal on Logseq!
I haven’t a clue, you’d have to ask Statcounter. IMO their numbers usually don’t vary much from other sites. YMMV
and with that I think I’ll retire from this conversation.
Any screen shots of this? I see it mentioned for IOS but haven’t seen any. This will be amazing if we get reminders integrated to calendars and a usable month view.
I’ve tried to upload photos but I keep getting DNS errors.
It has been broken for a while now:
In the past it seemed like a tactical miss that some features were buggy and held back.
Now it seems like a planned reality with no attempt to deliver everything in one big release anymore,
And I think that is a good thing!
This exists now! You can try it during a phone call in Control Centre (you must manually activate it currently, although it seems like that’s what’s changed in the new version, but who knows).
After watching this Apple Knowledge Navigator video - from 1987 maybe Apple has been thinking about AI longer than we thought. It looks like the 2024 presentation was modeled from the past. The difference is we really have the technology today. I hope the link works.
I typically would not say this in an open forum, but bravo! I may only be referencing your original post linked to this comment, but thank you for this. Bravo!
At the risk of further torturing your analogy:
If there was a combination toaster-microwave machine, that was missing a button to start the microwave, it would be natural for buyers to wonder why no microwave button was added.
The fact that this hypothetical combination toaster-microwave has a fully operational toaster function, does not take away from the fact that the interface to the microwave capabilities is quite poor.
The manufacturer may have just intended to build a very good toaster — but if it had microwave capabilities that far exceed most microwaves, it would be natural for owners to want it to microwave as well.
Has iPadOS gotten better? Yes. Is it capable of doing many things Mac hardware can do, but lacking the software capabilities? Yes. Do tech media pundits overly criticize the iPad? Yes. These things don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
Just my 2¢.
I’m assuming you are talking about running macOS on an iPad … I’m sad to say I agree with Apple that there is not a good way to put macOs on the iPad form factor.
I would love to have some kind of macPad but I don’t see how Apple could do it in a way that I would actually like.
Not necessarily. The point I was trying to make is that there is no reason the hardware cannot support a more robust OS. It does not need to be macOS. For example, a more significant multitasking system, where jobs could run in the background.
Good luck with that.
I’m sure Apple realizes that there are still vast amounts of iPads being used don’t have that much memory to handle multi-tasking. But, I would love to have more multi-tasking at some point also.
I strongly agree. As a road warrior, this is always an issue. And by reading comments in this forum, it should make a lot of other people happy as well.
There is also another feature that I don’t remember being mentioned that is HUGE. That is Apple Notes and collapsible sections.
