WWDC 2024 Reactions and Reflections

I’m delighted to finally get the calculator app on the iPad even though I do only simple math, though I’ve been known to occassionally throw an elasticity calcuation out to grad students just to scare them. :slightly_smiling_face::smiling_imp:

Does anyone know if Password in IOS/MacOS provides OTP or 2FA?

It does. OTP for sure. You can also use YubiKey if I am not mistaken. Passwords as of iOS 17 is a bit basic, but good enough for me.

I’m running behind here on the Keynote, but catching up quickly.

I love the ability to lock any app, and also to hide an app.

So finally we can move our iOS icons anywhere on the screen  . Only took 10ish years??

I go into each WWDC with two requests.

Watch App on the iPad or Mac for an iPhone less experience (trying to get my watch to replace my phone) and a notes app for the watch.

The AI stuff makes me wary we shall see how it goes.

Among the big things, I’m happy about multiple screens in control center, and multiple button in place of flash and camera on the lock screen

I’m in the market for a new iPad, but the hardware still seems way ahead of the operating system. It seems like iPadOS is getting little love, but gaining from developments for other devices.

It’ll be interesting to see how “AI” works in the real world, although I’m not sure I’ll drop a four figure sum on a new phone and/or Mac just to have tighter integration. I’m mostly working with Obsidian these days which is already getting integration through plugins. Reprioritising notifications (which I have mostly turned off) isn’t too exciting! It’s disappointing older devices won’t be able to use off-device AI.

All that said, anything that improves Siri’s direction of travel has to be applauded!

Most updates this year look like sensible additions to me. Looking forward to playing around with Siri. I hope for Siri to be better with foreign languages though or bilingual, since it will be US English for starters. Navigating here in Germany will be a pain if Siri pronounces everything English. Although a cool cowboy accent during navigation would be cool :cowboy_hat_face:

Does anyone have any thoughts on iPhone Mirroring? I don’t see the use case; what am I missing?

Meetings and lectures. Laptop use is acceptable; phones are frowned upon.
Development.
Convenience, in general, while working.

That makes sense! :pray:t2:

Platforms State of the Union has just started and is usually worth watching. Lots on AI integration so far.

I understand that the Apple Intelligence stuff will be only for M1 devices and iPhone 15 Pro and newer phones, but will the ChatGPT integration be available on all devices?

The idea of being able to control my iPhone from another machine seems like it would be a nice, helpful thing but not something I’d ever have put on a wishlist. There are times my iPhone is charging in another room; so, it would be nice to be able to access it from my office rather than go fetch it. Again, that’s not a huge life changer, but seems useful. What I would like even more is if I could control my iPhone from the iPad.

What I picked up from this WWDC keynote was how the Mac is still intended to be a central hub of the entire Apple ecosystem. A number of things I saw looked like they were designed to enable greater continuity–type features. Even if that is for the cynical purpose of Apple wanting to sell more devices, I love the productivity enhancement that results from more control/interaction across devices.

I thought the demo of dragging data (an exported Final Cut Pro video) to an app on the iPhone when the iPhone wasn’t even nearby was especially impressive.

It’s almost like the iPhone-iPhone bump feature. Non-tech people love these little convenience features. My wife, who is tech-competent but who does not sit around watching WWDC keynotes, gravitates to features like this. Yesterday at a violin recital for my kids, she exchanged videos with a previously complete stranger, just by putting their phones together. Now, instead of texting me to find her phone, she can control it sitting right at her Mac. She’s gonna love this.

Yes, I I noticed the same thing.

I was watching WWDC sitting on the back patio while two guys install a new expensive AC/Heating system in the house. MBP, iPad Pro, Pencil Pro, Magic Keyboard, Watch Ultra 2, iPhone Max, Vision Pro, HomePod Minis, large HomePods, Display, accessories, services, and a new AC. Oh, and this morning I had the tires rotated, an alignment, and oil change on my vehicle, $480; as they say, it’s only money!

:joy:

What makes you think he was really on the roof?

Did Apple hit AI out of the park? Will Wall Street respond positively? :ox:

Ah. Didn’t realize that. :+1:
