I have been using 1Password for some time. No real issues with it, but there is a motto on another well known podcast: If it ain’t broke, fix it until it is. Also, there could be a small savings on cost, and with the numerous subscriptions already active, I’m always looking to cut down on ongoing costs, so…
I have been looking at alternatives to 1Password, including BitWarden, StrongBox, and ProtonPass.
I was wondering if anyone had opinions, good or bad, or share.
I’ve used 1Password for decades. Family Plan to share with my wife. I briefly considered changing to the Apple Passwords app, but I use 1Password so thoroughly that I would lose features.
Frankly, it seems like I use 1Password more than any other app. I know it is the first to install on a new machine.
I’m hoping Passwords evolves to slightly better than MVP.
I use 1Password (I need the multiple vaults and additional features), but have a majority of family members that are not willing to learn a 3rd party app.
I’m hoping Passwords is just enough utility beyond just letting Safari save passwords automatically that family members “I support” will no longer be the headache they are now.
I used 1Password for years, but recently (2 months) switched to using the built-in, free, Apple Passwords. I find it easier and less hassle to use than 1Password, and so far, I haven’t missed it at all.
1Password has more advanced features that I don’t want or need. I have some email passwords that I used to store in 1P in locked Notes files. Does the same job, and I don’t care that they are not in the same app. Passwords also has a shared passwords feature, and I don’t have to pay extra for a family plan to have them.
I don’t need the most powerful or “king” of apps for something as simple as password management.
Not debating your needs here, but the logic. For something as important as Password Management, it is not about power only, but how secure the architecture and the software is. Also there are feature related to password management like “secrets management” that are not simple. I understand Apple Passwords is very secure, but not feature complete.
So TLDR, password management is not simple, on contrary it’s critical and complex.
Same here. I switched 2 weeks ago, and the only time I’ve missed 1p is when I had to find the CVV code for my credit card for Apple Pay, after I nuked my MacBook air.
I use Bitwarden and am happy with it. The free version is generous and the paid version is inexpensive. The new Apple Passwords app is probably fine, but I don’t want my passwords locked into one vendor’s operating systems and devices, and I don’t want all my critical data in one basket.
This won’t be a popular opinion and others will disagree, but I think the popularity of 1Password among Apple users is mostly driven by habit from the days when it was a native app, was the only really good password manager for Apple devices, and the company was focused on serving individual Apple users. Now it’s mostly just another cross-platform Electron app, overpriced and with a corporate focus on enterprise sales.
Same here. I’ve been using 1PW for years and use several of its features. But I also like the idea of it being separate from my device’s operating system.
Tip: this is a good site to keep up with security issues. Search for a vendor (upper right of page) , then select Advisory to limit your results.
I’m not opposed to eventually trying the Password app. I will wait for 6-12 months before using it to make sure no issues arrive (bugs, security) during that time.
My main issue with passwords is that it doesn’t do credit cards, and I use Arc rather than safari, so I’m unable to autofill credit cards without 1password. Otherwise I’m in the same situation; I’d love to be able to use passwords as my partner is unlikely to get on 1password.
